    Default Can't restore iPhone 3GS from 3.1.2 to 3.1.2

I just bought an iPhone 3GS with FW3.1.2/BB5.11.07. I want to do a fresh restore and I've got the Apple 3.1.2 FW downloaded, however, when I SHIFT+RESTORE, I get the following error:

The iPhone could not be restored. This device is not eligible for the requested build.

I looked around and tried updating the host file with the following Saurik server lines:

    74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Neither of these worked and I keep getting the same error when I try restoring it back to 3.1.2. I'm guessing updating to 3.1.3 would be a disaster and since Apple has stopped signing the 3.1.2 firmware, how do I restore it back to 3.1.2 and then JB/UL my device.

Thanks for any help you can give!!

    - Zsh

When you drop to a terminal window or command prompt and type in "ping gs.apple.com", what is the output? Which IP Address replies to the ping request?
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

    iPhone 4, 32GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n | SHSH: 4.0 - 6.1.2)

There seems to be a problem with my command prompt, I can't open it so can't find out where the ping is being replied from. Any other way around?

    EDIT:

I downloaded a command prompt executable from the web and pinged gs.apple.com:

When "hosts" file contains "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com"
    Ping is returned from 74.208.10.249

When "hosts" file contains "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com"
    Ping is returned from 74.208.105.171

Just FYI, I'm using iTunes 9.0.3.15 on Windows 7. Where do we go from here?

I'm reading on and it says that the "hosts" file method is only for 3GS owners who's SHSH is stored on Saurik's server. I just opened my 3GS so my SHSH is definitely not up there. Any directions?

I got my iPhone's ECID but I'm unable to generate the SHSH file using umbrella. It can't seem to retrieve the SHSH file from either Apple or Saurik's server. Help!!

    - you cannot get 3.1.2 shsh from apple because they stopped signing that firmware a while ago.

    - you cannot get 3.1.2 shsh from saurik if it does not already exist.

    - the only thing you can get now is 3.1.3 shsh

So, I should upgrade to a custom FW 3.1.3 with BB 5.11.07 and get an SHSH for that? After that I can logically downgrade back to 3.1.2. Is this possible?

you don't have to upgrade to get shsh for 3.1.3.
Just use cydia and click on "make my life easier".
Getting an shsh in independent of the firmware currently ON your iphone.

    Every firmware has different shsh.
If you don't have shsh for fw 3.1.2, you cannot restore fw 3.1.2 to the phone

Would someone be kind enough to mail me an iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 SHSH file at zeeshansohail@gmail.com.

I'd like to see if I can use that to restore my iPhone back to 3.1.2.

    Thanks in advance.

It does not work like that, the SHSH is personalised for your phone. You can't use someone else's.
