My brother is in New York.He used to live in the states and has a SSN,though he has more than a year without living there.

Can he go to an Apple store and use his old SSN? For example i want a 32GB 3GS.That will be $299+$36+$80+Tax. Around $445 and he walks from the store with the phone right?

Then what do i have to do.. in order to avoid the ETF fee?
If not, i'll pay the ETF but then how is the cancellation process?

I've read here that you can cancel your contract by phone and not necessarily give your phone back to AT&T telling them its broken or something. Can someone specify. PLEASE HE LEAVES TOMORROW.
    iPhone 2G 8GB 3.1
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Unlocked since September 19th 2007.

Keep in mind that you have a strong chance of getting a 3GS with an updated bootrom that requires re-jailbreaking each time you restart the iPhone.

You really are better off getting someone to buy a properly factory unlocked iPhone from any of the various countries that sell these now. (Belgium, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand)

It will cost a little more, but you don't need to rely on hacking it to unlock and re-jailbreak each time it boots to use it in another country.

Brazilian citizens can also buy a phone and request their carrier unlock for free, according recent changes on telephony laws. It is never suggested, however, because of iPhone prices: ranging from US$500 to US$1400, depending on chosen plan. Yeah, prices sucks.

The real cost of the iPhone (unlocked, without contract or subsidy) is between US$800 and US$950 depending on which model you get. This is accurately reflected in the price at which you can purchase an iPhone outright from Apple in the countries where the law requires that they offer an unlocked iPhone or Apple has no exclusive contract with a specific carrier.

Where carriers offer the capability to unlock the iPhone by paying out the contract, this is usually a higher price because they need to recoup their expected revenue over the contract's length.

People seem to forget this is a smartphone, a top end item that is subsidised by the carriers. The real cost of the iPhone over a 2 year contract length can be easily US$2000 with AT&T for example.

For those reason I didn't buy a 3GS. Everytime hassle with jailbreak and unlock. Everytime a new firmware is out you have to wait etc etc. I got tired of that. Thats why I went for the N900.
I have to admit though, after using the first gen for a while you wouldn't want to trade for any. But everytime a new firmware comes out, there's a procudure etc etc Nehhh..
The N900 has bassically all that I want in a phone. And awesome looking bseides being thick. I ordered the N900... can't wait for it to get here.
