You need to talk to the carrier who sold you the locked iPhone to get it removed. If you are willing to pay off the contract most carriers are willing to unlock the phone for you.

ZEEK i think hes probably a scammer... coz i clicked buy now once and before i payed he made a discount on the 3GS so i told him to cancel my payment so i can pay for the cheap one he said i have to buy it first which means i would have paid for two and received one.. so anyways i dont think ebay is very safe anyways

    Default How does this work?

    Hi,
I was wondering why and how the following worked:

I have a Spanish iPhone 3G from Movistar that is locked; whichever Spanish SIM card I try, the iPhone will not work. That is, I can internet and use WiFi, but I cannot phone any number with my spanish non-Movistar SIMs.
However, when someone told me that the phone will work only outside Spain with any SIM card (even Spanish non-Movistar SIMs) I set out to try that as soon as I was abroad.
So, today in Belgium I tried my iPhone with my Spanish Vodaphone SIM and... Voila... the iPhone worked.

Has MoviStar somehow made the phone locked only for inside Spain, so that their custómers can use other SIMs when traveling abroad?

    I appreciate your explanations.

I don't think so, a locked phone will only allow a SIM card to boot up in the phone if it's from the carrier it's locked to, I haven't heard of any other type of locking mechanisms.

Another scenario might be that Movistar has somehow got the cell towers to stop allowing the phone with your IMEI number from using a SIM that's not Movistar, therefore it would work in another country where Movistar doesn't own the towers. THEORETICALLY that is a possibility, however I find it VERY unlikely.

If what you are saying is true, then I would advice you to contact your Spanish carrier for an explanation.

    32Gb iPhone 3GS - Officially unlocked

This does sound very plausible, though. I say that because a friend of mine that works at Yoigo (Spanish phone company) said also that this would work just fine (the reason I set out to try it). I will now ask him if he knows why this works (hopefully confirming your story) when I'm back.
Furthermore, since Movistar allows other providers to use their network they obviously would need a way to distinguish phones from different providers. If this is in place, it looks to me a simple job to add the blocking. Or am I talking out of my ... now?

    cheers

David - Congrats on your legally unlocked iphone. Have you updated without being locked? Also, who's the ebay seller? It seems like he/she did above and beyond to make things right. I'm interested since I will be travelleng internationally.
