What I would like to know is if it is true that all these carriers sell unlocked iPhone handsets?

*NOTE* All of these confirmations are for the iPhone 3G, but the assumption is that not much will change with the 3G S
when you say cyprus all carries with phone what do u mean?

we only have two carriers in cyprus mtn and cyta. but when you buy the iphone you can use any carrier in the world and it will work fine if thats what you mean?

    Hello guys,
I bought a 16GB 3G like 6 months ago from an ebay seller called "coolgadget2008" it was a bit expensive in that time around US $900 but it's officially unlocked by Apple, I've upgraded from 2.2 to 2.2.1 and then to 3.0 without a single problem using a non-iphone sim card. I'm currently using it with 3.0 installed and not a single problem. I'm thinking about selling this one and buying the 3GS from the same seller. Not trying to do spam or anything like that, I'm just sharing my experience with factory unlocked iphones, I know they are expensive but you don't have to worry about jb and all that...
I forgot to mention this seller is from Australia.

    Good luck!

ive been using IPOT 2G but wanting to move to 3GS but not familiar with the JB/Unlocking process on the phones and talk about basebands etc.

EDIT: ok, in case people start saying "dont know until JB comes out", on the 3G, with an unlocked phone, could it be safely JB?
    thanks
I have Cydia in my 3G officially unlocked but I'm waiting for JB for the 3GS I tried with redsnow but it doesn't recognise the firmware.

here, in Italy, you can also buy unlocked iPhones from the online Apple Store and, but I'm not 100% sure, in the one and only physical Apple Store in Rome

    (no: they won't ship abroad!)

Italian PAYG phones have always been unlocked. My old 3G was from Italy and was factory unlocked (still is), and the 3GS I've just received is also factory unlocked.

I bought from a great chap off eBay (ful28361) who, despite Paypal being an utter pain in the arse, turned out to be incredible honest and followed through with everything despite Paypal and eBay trying to screw up the transaction. I'd recommend using him if you're buying eBay iPhones.

There's no messing about with the Italian phones either - just put in a SIM, connect to iTunes and it'll say 'congratulations, your phone is unlocked'. I use Vodafone UK.

Incidentally that 'congratulations your phone is unlocked' message is surprising - suggests that there's a way within iTunes to unlock a phone. After all, if only the 'factory unlocked' models were hard-coded to not have a carrier lock then why would Apple put such a screen into iTunes?

Perhaps Apple are anticipating legal challenges in the future when original contracts are well expired and people want to unlock the handsets as is legally required in their country... which opens up the possibility of spoofing the handshake process within iTunes...

It has always been there - the screen. i have a factory unlocked 2G (and an unlocked 3G). The screen popped up even in the early days two years ago. 2G's sold in France and - for 10 days - 2G's sold in Germany used to be unlocked due to local law. With 3G more countries with similar laws joinde the club.

iTunes is kind of a helper in unlocking the iPhone. Once you connect the iPhone some unique hadrware IDs of the iPhone are sent to Apples servers. Those IDs are compared to a database. If the iPhone is marked as factory unlocked a unique token, only valid for this one iPhone is send via iTunes to the iPhone and unlocking it ;-)

    Default Unlocked Iphones from Australia

Have a chance to get an unlocked phone from Australia at a reasonable price at least compared to Italy. Phone is factory pasked and the seller says all I have to do is connect to Itunes and it should work fine. After that will put in my SIM. Does this sound correct? Alternatively he suggested he open the package unlock with Itunes and then send it to me. All help welcomed
