Default Buying 3gs at apple and cancelling contract costs?

    Hi People,

Question, If i buy a iphone 3gs at apple store with cheapest contract and the same day cancel the contract. Would i get charged anything extra by at&t besides the $175 Early termination fee? I also plan on doing this without returning the phone back to the store and keeping it.

From what i understand i can cancel at&t at any time and be charged $175, now in there policy it say's there is no activation charge if it's canceled in first 3 days, this is what it said on my receipt:

    ----------
    30-Day Cancellation Policy
I may terminate this Agreement within 30 days after activating service without paying an Early Termination Fee. I will pay all fees and charges incurred through the termination date, but AT&T will refund any activation fee if I terminate within three days of activation. Also, I may have to return any handsets and accessories purchased with this Agreement and pay any applicable restocking fees. If I terminate after the 30th day but before Agreement's Service Commitment has expired, I will pay AT&T an Early Termination Fee for each wireless telephone number associated with the service.

    --------

So if i cancel within the first 3 days they waive the activation charge? Also if i don't use the phone, will they also not charge me for the cost of service or they will still charge me that $69/month plan as well regardless if it's within the first 3 days?

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

If you cancel within three days, you won't have to pay any charges (activation, usage, etc.)

However, you must return the phone and its equipment if you cancel within the first month. I tried doing this to get an iPhone 3G several months ago, but had no choice but to return it back to the Apple store.

I used about three minutes and several MB of data. They didn't charge me anything and refunded everything back to me.

Once you pay your first month's bill, you will be able to cancel with the $175 cancellation fee and keep the phone.

Thanks tubaman, so basically they will refuse to cancel it until you return it? Can they forcefully refuse to not cancell it or will there be a special charge if i tell them i want to keep the phone within the first 3 days?

I tried every excuse I could think of to keep the iPhone 3G. But they (AT&T Support) said that there are no exceptions and I have to return the phone to where I bought it.

That was a pain. The Apple Store I bought it from was an hour away.

I bought it at a subsidized price because AT&T did not offer the no commitment pricing at the time.

I had to return to cancel. They wanted the phone first before going through the cancellation procedures.

they charge the full cost, which is 3gs 599/699

its best to buy for 199/299, wait a month and pay 135 plus 175

So basically what I'm understanding the only way to keep it without at&t charging you for it calling them up the day before your first month ends and cancell it. This way you only pay the $299 + tax that apple charged you, and then the $36 activation + $69 contract + $175 ETF ? is this right?

    > is this right?

    yes, plus tax

so basically, the ATT program works like this..

buy the phone, get a service plan, use it for 30 days, then cancel the contract and pay the early termination fee

that comes out cheaper by $120 on a 32gig 3GS, than the no commitment price, plus you get to experience the ATT service for a month, its blazing fast on 3G internet, compared to TmobileUSA on Edge..

Here is how I know, I own a 3G purchased from ATT. They refused to cancel service in 3 days unless I returned the phone. They said I could keep the phone if I first consumed at least 1 month of service.. which I did. The early termination fee btw, goes down by $5 per month so its 170 instead of 175 by the time they let you cancel and keep the phone..

I plan to get a 3GS on ATT and test it for a month against my 3G unlocked on Tmobile.. then decide. Hopefully by then, DevTeam or Geohot will have released a 3GS unlock.. in which case I could keep it on Tmobile to save $45 a month..

Well, they will charge you one month ahead too.
So your first month is around $200.
You should talk to them and subtract that month you are not going to use.
