I would like to purchase a iPhone 3GS(8GB) which is now 49$ and cancel the contract.
Does anyone know what would it cost totally; I mean excluding the early termination
fee which is 325$. Also another important question is what baseband is on the 3GS they sell in the stores? Is it unlockable or not?

I'm assuming it would be $49 + ETF + Activation fee + 1 months service + tax (you have to keep the phone for 30 days before cancelling at end of 30th day or AT&T will require that you return the phone when cancelling the contract)

The baseband is not unlockable, but the 3GS can be updated to iPad baseband and unlocked that way (with some risks).

To be honest, you are better off trying to find a second hand but out of warranty 3GS that is broken - then pay Apple $199 + tax + shipping to get it repaired out of warranty.
