Brand New to Iphone
I am a complete newbie to iphone. I upgraded to a new 3gs with rogers from a blackberry curve. I have to say I do love the phone itself. i have a couple of complaints/problems that maybe someone who has had one for a while can help me with.
I read that the phone has push email which wasn't critical for me but I loved it on the bb and would like to have it. I can't get it to work...is that normal. It doesn't work at all with the pop account from my cable internet...hotmail doesn't even exist in the iphone work apparently. So i signed up for yahoo. FINALLY it gave me an option for push email...problem is it doesn't work. Sometimes the message comes 2-5 min after its sent...other times it comes 2hours later...not much for push. Is this normal or what am I doing wrong.
Second issue is Instant Messaging. That appears to be another thing that doesn't exist on the iphone. On my bb I had MSN and BB messanger. Both worked flawlessly. Someone IMed me and instantly my blackberry notified me. I came to really use IM so much on my BB. I really need it to work on my Iphone. SO how do I do it? I've looked everywhere and can't find anything that works. The only thing that they have with push just sends you an email when someone is sending an IM. But since my push email doesn't work how am I suppose to know that someone is texting me.
I really am frustrated by all this, and really miss my bb. I have to say I love the iphone for the ipod features the browsing is AMAZING. its lightnig quick, but if I can't get these things to work Im gonna have to go back to my boring BB...PLEASE HELP if you can. It would be greatly appreciated. THANKS
First of all, welcome to the Iphone community
Make sure you have Push turned on (Settings>General>Mail>Fetch New Data) then choose how often you want data to be received. To be more sure, tap on advanced, then your account, and make sure Fetch is chosen.
I really hope this helps.
As for your second question, I hope some one else jumps in and helps you

Hey Devil...thanks for the welcome. I was starting to feel like my question was dumb as no one had an answer or cared to give one. I have done a lot of reading on the iphone and have come to a conclusion that in order for this phone to do what I want it to do I have to Jailbreak it. Since there is no jailbreak for a 3GS I'm kinda stuck. For anyone who might have the same problem as me I signed up for a free 2 month trial of mail2web email where the push function actually works with the iphone as well as it should since its a paid service. I then get my notifications from IM pushed to that account so when someone is texting me I get an email. There is a great program that I read about available for the jailbroken iphone called backgrounder which allows your IM to run in the background which really should be built into the OS to start with, why it's not there I can't figure out. Or why Apple won't release an app for that. I can't imagine that one IM app will make the iphone run so much slower
Like I said I don't care that emails don't get pushed...not critical for me 15 min fetch is fine, but I really need this backgrounder app. I'm gonna keep my iphone until the jailbreak is available. Once I get the IM going this phone will be perfect...if I get this keyboard thing figured out a little better
IM push is available from both Beejive and IM+. I personally use Beejive and believe its one of the better ones in the app store.
The Push is via Apple's push notification services so it works brilliantly. Give it a shot!
I'm not sure I inderstand what you mean that the push is done via the apple server. I still wouldn't get the message since my email isn't really push. Like I said though I'm ok with not having push email, as long as I can get an I'm program to run in the background which apperently I can do with a backgrounder app that's available once jailbroken. I think that's my best bet. For now I signed up for a two month trial to mai2web which is a Microsoft exchange client and push works perfect. I use palringo messanger with push it workable very well. The messages aren't instant but quick enough. For now, but I really can't wait for a jailbreak so I can get the I'm to work like it did on my bb. Also would love to change some of the sounds on this thing especially the email. I have to say I like the phone more and more everyday. I've had a few chances to make a trade for a bb bold plus cash but I think I'll keep my iPhone. Ive got a program now called pocker tunes which allowsme to stream Sirius stern specifically to my iPhone which is fantastic. Ivewanted a bb to do that for so long and I finallyhave a phone that can do it. Small victories lol.
I appreciate the posts, I am on my way to really enjoy this phone. Now if they could finally release this jailbreak.
Push notification does not involve email at all. Let me give you an example of how it works for me:
- I open Beejive and log into MSN messenger.
- I can exit out of Beejive and it will keep me signed into MSN for x hours
- When an MSN contact sends me an IM, an alert shows up on my phone just like an SMS text message alert.
- I can then open Beejive to read the message and reply
- For more information google "Apple Push Notification Services"
lol wow I didn't know that thank you you the info.
I just downloaded a I'm client ebuddy with push amrit works like you said, when I get a IM it gives off a sound plus vib and a message on the screen. I just got that one to try cause it was free. Beejive is likely way better, but I'll wait till palringo comes out with push in the next couple of days as it supports a client I use that beejive doesn't. Still I'm very happy that it works like that. So once again thanks for that. I though push meant you just get a email when someone texts you.
