Hi

Just got my brand new 3GS on PAYG from o2 in UK.

Total n00b and just wanted to confirm quick question..
I have inserted the Sim and have it charging via the wall plug.

When switched on, it is asking to be connected to iTunes.

Is there some software (Firmware Umbrella?) that I use before hand to save my firmware/whatever before connecting to iTunes? I have been reading as much as possible but all still a bit confusing.

Can I just connect to iTunes, but refuse to update to latest software (if it doesn't already have latest) ?

I am not that bothered about Jailbreaking now, but like the idea of having the option in the future. I have no idea yet if the phone has come with 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 installed.

Any help? Apologies if this is stated in an obvious FAQ, but I couldn't find it..:

Yeah, ok. I am a total iPhone n00b, so finally after digesting many threads which probably don't even apply .....
it seems as long as I don't update to 3.1.3 when I plug it in to iTunes, I *should* have some options down the line for Jailbreaking the phone if I want to...

Yes that is true. You should get and store your 3.1.3 SHSH in a safe place, that will come in handy when a future jailbreak is released.
