Bought iPhone 3GS - What to do to JB/unlock?
Hi!
There is a similar recent thread, but i didn't want to hijack it because my concerns are a little different, so:
I bought a new iPhone 3GS, and i need to jailbreak and unlock it.
It's a 84002XXXXXX serial number, and i have these versions:
Firmware: 3.1.2
Baseband: 05.11.07
Bootrom: 359.3.2 (tethered JB, right?)
I have connected the phone to iTunes, but i didn't apply any update, i just set it up as a new iPhone and synced my contacts.
So, i'd like to know which software i should use to JB+unlock it.
Blackra1n+Blacksn0w?
Redsn0w+Blacksn0w? (i think that one is out of the plans, because i can't restore to 3.1.2 firmware anymore, or can i run Redsn0w to JB without restoring first?)
Pwnagetool is also an option as i may have a Mac computer available for that, but i don't know if it supports JBing the new bootrom 3GS.
By the way, what's the difference between Blackra1n and Redsn0w jailbreaks? (Why does one need a restore and the other doesn't?)
Thank you for your patience and help
EDIT:
PS: I won't use it with AT&T, so i think hacktivation is necessary.

Yes, you have the new bootrom (tethered JB).
First, NEVER NEVER update your phone to 3.1.3 because :
- you will get a new Baseband and lose the chance to unlock the phone,
- you will also lose the chance to jailbreak (3.1.3 is not jailbreakable with the 3gs new bootrom).
- You will be not able to downgrad the firmware because you dont have the shsh for the fw 3.1.2 and will never get it.
For the jailbreak, you have 2 possibility :
- Blackra1n or redsn0w (be sure to download last version). If you want to use redsn0w, here are the informations to use it: Dev-Team Blog
I personally would recommend the redsn0w.
To unlok the baseband, your only chance for now is to use Blacksn0w (this can be installed after the jb from cydia).
Dont do mistake during the process because you could be forced to restore your phone in 3.1.3, this would be very bad for you because you would end up with a locked baseband and an unjailbreakable and not downgradable 3.1.3fw.
After the jailbreak, I also recommend you to accept to store the shsh on cydia (first or second startup of cydia I think, just click on YES).
Pwntool does NOT work with the 3gs new bootrom.
Also do not forget that with the 3GS new bootrom, if you want to restart your phone for some reasons, you will have to connect the iPhone to a computer and redone the jailbreak with redsn0w/blackra1n.
Depending on how you activated your iPhone, you could need the fix to get Push working correctly on your iPhone :
- If you first activated your phone with a at&t card through iTunes, you do not need to fix the push , redsn0w/blackra1n wont touch the itunes activation. (I think it is what you have done as you wrote that you activated your phone in iTunes)
- if you never done activation with iTunes before to use Blackra1n or redsn0w, than if you want to use push, you have to fix it. Here a how to fix it : http://www.hackint0sh.org/showthread...397#post500397.
At your place, I would not load my iPhone with too much things, I would only install what I really need till 3.1.3 will be jailbreakable and unlocked. Because as said before in case of big crash of the iPhone, you could end up to be forced to restore in 3.1.3. This would be the worst situation for you !!!!
When it will be possible to jb and unlock 3.1.3 and that you will have your shsh on cydia for this fw, it will be safer for you and will have always the possibility to restore the iPhone without loosing jb/unlock at 3.1.3, this will be probably possible in the future, but nobody actually know when!! It is supposed that this will be possible when the iPhone4g/iPad will be realised by Apple.
Godd luck

Thank you for the reply.
As i understood, i can run redsn0w now without restoring to the *clean* 3.1.2 with no problems, right?
As for the activation, i didn't activate the phone, as i bought it with no contract - just the handset, and on iTunes when i connected the phone i just clicked "Register Later" or something like that.
I don't really mind about the push because i won't use it.
So it's a GO for redsn0w+blacksn0w?

Yes, it is the way to go.
Redsn0w will need the fw 3.1.2 to do the job, you must download it before to start.
When redsn0w will ask you if it is a 3GS with new bootrom, reply "yes"
Redsn0w will give you the instruction step by step.

Ok, it's done!
The first time it rebooted from unlock i had no problems, wi-fi was working right away.
Then i had to reboot it after installing an app from Cydia, and then the Wi-fi was dead, which was promptly fixed by resetting network settings.
Youtube and GPS seems to work fine also.
Thanks for your help!
