hi, i've got an iphone 3gs (locked to o2) and i'm going to get the 4g next week. i was wondering if it is possible for me to transfer all my text messages etc from the 3gs to the 4g? thanks

Yep. Get the new phone, plug into iTunes, it will ask if you want to set up as a new phone or restore from a backup of your iPhone 2G/3G/S. If you say yes, it'll copy all the apps, contacts, pictures, call history, SMS history, etc.

Yep! Just make sure you plug your old one in first so that you get an up-to-date backup. That said, if, after restoring, you have issues, the first thing people will tell you to do is make a backup of your contacts (and your SMS or Call History databases if you want) and restore the phone and set it up as new.
That said, I restored 4.0 and told it to restore from my 3GS's backup (which was also running 4.0), and I had no problems.
