Default 3GS went from 100% to dead, won't charge?

My 3GS was plugged in all night and working fine this morning -- got a call from my friend who wanted to stop by to pick up some stuff. Left the phone unplugged on the desk in my room while I took a shower, came back to discover that it was now dead and won't charge. When I plug it in, it shows the 'empty battery/charging' screen, but it never charges.

I tried booting into both recovery and DFU mode and then back out, no luck. It seems weird to me that the battery would just suddenly die; usually these kinds of problems are due to overheating or overzealous chargers, neither of which seems to have been the culprit. Has anyone seen this before?

(I realize I will probably just need to get a replacement from Apple, but I'd at least like to find a way to boot it once so I can pull off my un-synced photos and whatnot.)

1st time, i connected the usb cable 1st to the iphone then plug in to the wall socket.
2nd time, it didnt work but was able to get my comp to recognize in dfu mode and did a shift restore. after that went straight to apple to get it replaced.
