Default 3GS updated to 3.1.2 from 3.0.1 caused SERIOUS battery probs :(

A buddy of mine has a 3GS on AT&T USA. It was jailbroken, he decided he wanted 3.1.2 - so we did the upgrade to a custom 3.1.2 ipsw, which completed successfully. BUT after the upgrade he experienced TERRIBLE battery issues. Spikes and sudden drops from 60% to 10%... stuff like that.

We re-installed 3.1.2 again from a custom firmware, and still same problem. Then we tried a FACTORY IPSW restore, which upgraded his baseband to 05.11 and 3.1.2 on his 3GS - still the same battery issues with a factory firmware. (no jailbreak, nothing that was not 100% apple firmware and activation)

So then he called Apple, the apple guys told him to take his phone back to an apple store - and they switched out his week 28 3GS which was fully jailbreakable, with a week 52 with the newer iboot and is NOT jailbreakable! (well, a non-tethered anyway)

So, what's the bottom line? before the upgrade, on 3.0.1 his 3GS was perfect. After the upgrade to 3.1.2, he suffered serious battery problems. Power spikes up and down - that's unacceptable.... I'm worried because I have a week 29 3GS at 3.0.1, and my cydia shshs keys are only for 3.1 and 3.1.2 - no 3.0 keys. I grabbed my own iboot keys when I first got this phone, but cydia doesn't have them.

Now I'm worried about doing the ugprade myself and having the same problem. His battery problem was so bad, he was FORCED into exchanging his phone under warranty because the battery swings were sooo bad they made the phone unusable reliably.

    QUESTIONS:
    1) Is this battery problem common when upgrade week 28 and/or week 29 3GS's to 3.1.2?

    2) Having captured the "keys" myself (and not thru cydia) for 3.0, does that give ME the ability to restore an earlier version ? (ie: go back to 3.0.1 using my captured keys?)

You have saved your signed iBEC and iBSS certificates, these are pretty much useless unless you have devteam skillz. This is because you are missing approx 20 other files that also needed to be backed up.

These files are saved in a temporary directory on your computer during an authorized restore via iTunes (more recent iTunes versions don't do this, I think you need iTunes 8.2.x). You may be lucky and the temp directory is still present on your computer from months back when you did a restore.

I think your friends problem was an isolated incident and he did the right thing in getting it replaced under warranty. Did he actually verify that the week 52 phone had the newer iBoot? This is easy to do without jailbreaking PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X Most replacement phones are refurbished and in this case the week number can't be trusted as a guide of old and new iBoot.
