is it in true "recovery mode" or does it say "slide for emergency" at the bottom of the screen?

Download TinyUmbrella from here: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella and run it while the phone is connected via USB - it should tell you what iOS version, baseband etc your phone has.

TinyUmbrella also has an option that allows you to force the phone out of recovery mode. This works in most situations.

If iTunes tells you the phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored, just ignore that for now.

That doesn't look like tiny umbrella is detecting a proper ID for the phone either.

I just checked with one of my devices in recovery mode.

So.. iTunes version? Have you tried to remove and reinstall iTunes (properly)? Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

    Tried a different computer/USB cable?

EDIT: I have checked, you have no SHSH for anything except iOS 4.2.1 (which Apple is still signing)

It is IMPOSSIBLE to restore any iOS version except 4.2.1 if you don't have a saved SHSH.

Don't even consider limera1n, use redsn0w first and only try other alternatives if for some reason redsn0w doesn't work for you.

Also limera1n only works with 4.1 and 4.0.2, both are iOS versions that you can never restore to.
