Default 3Gs (not jailbroken) unable to restore

Hope this is the correct forum. I'm helping a friend research this, but can only find folks with jailbreak problems in my searches (I've never had or seen this issue). This phone is NOT jailbroken.
A buddy of mine took his phone out of his pocket today, and it asked for a passcode. He never entered a passcode (doesn't even know how). Checking online, everyone says there's no "default" passcode. So we went to restore it and when connected to itunes in restore mode it says "device isn't eligible for requested build". He is still on 3.1.3, never upgraded to 4. Obviously no backups with Cydia or anything.
Any advice (he certainly doesn't want to pay Apple to unlock his phone that shouldn't be locked in the first place...)?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    CJ

Only way to fix this is going to be through Apple, I'm afraid. Since the device isn't jailbroken, you can't do any of the tricks to get the passcode lock removed. I'd recommend he visit the Apple Store. It's likely they will just upgrade the device to 4.0, however, so .....

i have a similar issue, i bought an iPhone 3gs advertised as broken glass and digitizer, i replaced the glass and digitizer and phone boots up but asks a passcode. The seller says he bought a liquidation lot and have no knowledge of the passcode.

I could confirm this has the older bootrom [iBoot-359.3], checked this through "usbview".

I am guessing that this is running IOS 4 or IOS 3.1.3?? but was not jailbroken.

Now DiskAid and iPhone Browser would not connect to the iPhone as it is passcoded and iTunes would not connect to it it either.

I try to put it in DFU mode and tried to restored it with IOS 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1 but everytime iTunes gives me an error [error 2002, 2005 etc].

I also tried to put the phone in recovery mode and restore still iTunes error persists.

Tried it on PC and MAC.

Also, tried restoring it to a custom firmware 4.0 built with Pwnage Tool 4.0.1 but no luck.

    Any help?
