Default 3GS: No custom firmware install possible

    Hi Guys,

i have updated my 3GS/32 with production week 30 (no simlock) which had a blackra1n jailbreak to 4.0 yesterday.
of couse jailbreak was not possible.

Now i downloaded a custom firmware 4.0 for 3GS but i am not able to install it.
If phone is in recoverymode i get error 1604, if it is in DFU mode i get error 1600.
i tryed with itunes 9.2 and 9.1 on different computers.
original 4.0 firmware is no problem to recover.

if have this SDND (or so) file on cydia for 3.1.2, but i am afraid that i can not downgrade again.

so any idea why i can not install a custom firmware but can install the original firmware?

is it a security problem from nokia?

    Thanks for any hints,
    Wolf.

dont forget to add the address xxxxxxx.gs.apple.com something like that so it can look for it in saurik server... and also use tinyumbrella 4.0

    Solution to your problem:

    1. Use TinyUmbrella or saurik's server or Hack that Phone - iPhone 3G S: Restoring "forbidden" firmware to restore to original OS 3.1.2 (not custom)
    2. Pwn your phone via one of the following: blackra1n RC3, redsn0w 0.9.2 or pwnagetool
    3. Restore the custom 4.0 IPSW

To clarify misconceptions in the other replies.

Your problem was caused by first loading iOS 4.0 (non custom). Doing this removed your pwn. Luckily you say you have a SHSH for 3.1.2. It is important to stay on the pwnagetrain.

The saurik server option is not needed for custom IPSW. It is only needed for original IPSW.

DFU mode is not supported with custom IPSW on the 3GS. You must use recovery mode for custom IPSW on the 3GS. The 3G and 2G use a different exploit and can load custom IPSW via DFU mode.

Spirit does not support jailbreaking iOS 4.0 at all. Spirit also fails to jailbreak on OS 3.1.x when you are running iTunes 9.2.
