So I've been browsing around on this site for the past week to no avail. I unluckily got the infinite recovery loop on my 16 gig iPhone 3gs and I couldn't do anything so I just let iTunes restore it. (After I found out about Spirit) Now it has 3.1.3 with the new baseband. The phone has the new boot rom as well. (Oh man can my luck get any worse?)

Here's my problem. I can't activate it! I have an AT&T SIM but it's not on the iPhone plan so I don't know if they'll slap on data if I activate my iPhone with it.

So my question is, can I activate my iPhone with the non-iphone AT&T sim card and avoid getting the data plan slapped onto my contract? Or is there a work around for me to hactivate my iPhone?

Any input would be greatly appreciated...I miss my iPhone so much!

EDIT: Alright never-mind, I just decided to do more googling and found out you just need to have a sim inside the phone for about a second so I inserted my sim and plugged it into iTunes and as soon as the iPhone was recognized. I unplugged the cable and VIOLA! It was in all its glory. Proceeded to jailbreak it with spirit and now I have 3.1.3 untethered jailbreak. Love it!

Spirit requires that you get past the connect to iTunes screen. You can't borrow a friend's SIM card that is on a legit plan?

Yeah I actually tried that...it still wouldn't boot up. The thing is none of my friends have an iPhone so I can't borrow their SIM cards. So am I stuck with a super expensive paperweight that can dial 911 until a new jailbreak that activates the phone comes out? Or is there another solution?

The only other option is if you have a SHSH for 3.1.2 backed up (via the "make my life easier" feature in Cydia or the firmware umbrella or AutoSHSH) then you can restore OS 3.1.2 and jailbreak with redsn0w or (not recommended - blackra1n)
