I'm using the 3GS on 3.0.1, never been jailbroken before, officially unlocked. I want to jailbreak it, but unfortunately apple doesn't allow me to restore to 3.1.2 via iTunes. Using redsn0w 0.8 with the 3.0.1 ipsw doesn't get recognised either. Can some one help me out?

redsn0w 0.8 or redsn0w 0.9.2 with 3.0 IPSW will do the trick. Not 3.0.1 IPSW (yes this seems confusing but it does work).

thanks and after that to get to 3.1.2? I do the SHSH trick with cydia and then restore via itunes to 3.1.2?

You must have an old bootrom (to still be running OS 3.0.x). Once jailbroken you can restore a custom 3.1.2 IPSW made with pwnagetool (or the unofficial windows clone which is not supported on this forum - sn0wbreeze). The jailbreak bypasses the SHSH checks so you can load custom IPSW.

As you are officially unlock, you may want to upgrade the baseband (the custom IPSW will prevent baseband upgrade)

See [3GS] Upgrading Baseband to 3.1 and jailbreaking.. best way? and [3GS] Upgrading Baseband to 3.1 and jailbreaking.. best way? for information on how to do this manually.

Please note that this is a one-way operation (the baseband upgrade). Going back to jailbroken OS 3.0.x is in theory possible but there is no pwnagetool for OS 3.0.x on a 3GS.

Thanks for replying mate. Yes I have the old bootrom. Just wondering tho, if I jb at 3.0.1, go to cydia and backup my shsh, then can I restore via itunes to 3.1.2 and use redsn0w to jb 3.1.2? feel safer with redsn0w (as it is tried and tested for me) and.. I don't have a mac.

No.. Apple already closed the door for 3.1.2 SHSH on 4th Feb.

You need to use custom IPSW your options are:

1. Pwnagetool (mac only) preferred option
2. Download a pre-made custom IPSW (needs to be a trusted source, phone must be already jailbroken)
3. xpwn (for the hardcore geeks - all platforms)
4. sn0wbreeze (windows) - never will be supported here due to the lax attitude towards copyright from the author. This is against the forums rules, no warez or anything similar allowed here.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible without the SHSH ? If so, how ?

Check the stickies. This topic has been discussed to death. If you're on 3.0.1, the odds are you have an old bootrom, in which case you can upgrade to a pwned 3.1.2 without the SHSH on file. That said, if you want to get a handle on what this all means, read the stickies -- there is too much to cover in a single reply.
