Default Your Cellular Network Is Restricted - any thoughts?

    Hello!

I bought an additional 8GB 3G phone off eBay on spec. Nice condition phone but...

Even when I put in the SIM from my existing iPhone I can't get past activation and when I try to manually join O2 (the approved iPhone network in the UK) I get "No Service" on the home screen and the following dialog box:

"Your selected cellular network is restricted. You can choose a different network in Settings."

I've used an online checker to verify the handset's IMEI isn't blocked and I've tried completely restoring the phone's OS from DFU mode all without success. The phone sees about a dozen networks, a mixture of 2G & 3G but it won't join any so the antenna isn't faulty as far as I can tell.

According to Settings > General > About > Model the handset is MB489B (without any trailing /A /B etc) which is identical to my other offical O2-store purchased 3G iPhone.

As I suspected, jailbreaking didn't help. ;-) I also tried restoring and [hopefully] activating on a separate computer which hadn't seen the new or existing phone... exactly the same problem.

Can anyone throw light on what this might be?

    Cheers,

    Steve

That problem has been connected to issues either with the network or the sim card. Either way, you need to call your carrier. Some have said its a database issue that can only be resolved by Tier 2 support, so be patient.

    Exclamation ;; im confused

i have a similar problem, i bought an iphone 3g from ebay and i never really used it as a phone, i jailbroke it and just recently i unlocked it with ultrasnow, however if i put in a 02 sim in, it says no service, so i guessed it was blocked, i put in a tmobile sim in, it detects the sim card, it lists as tmobile but doesnt allow me to make calls or recieve calls, iv tried a vodafone sim card, vodafone carrier does not come up and neither do any signal bars, anyway i was mixing about with sim cards when i came across a "lyca mobile" sim card which my sister was using with her nokia, i took out that sim and put it in my iphone, the LYCA MOBILE carrier name comes up and im also ALLOWED TO MAKE CALLS!! i can recieve calls too and texts, so i bought my own lyca mobile sim which can be bought from alot of retailers in the uk. but then i came across another problem, after a few hours, after inserting my lyca sim, it displays "no service" and the way to get it back to get it to work is if i insert the lyca sim into another phone and then put it back into the iphone, but after a few hours, it goes back to no service again.
so someone, can you please help,
    1. if possible, is there anyway i can stop it from going to the no service mode.
    2. how to make tmobile or vodafone sim to work. PLEASE HELP!!

It is quite likely you have bought a phone that has a blacklisted IMEI.

This would explain the symptoms. This phone is useless in the UK (eventually in the whole EU), there is no fix aside from pleading with o2 to remove the blacklist.

Different carriers implement IMEI blocking in different ways. Lyca is a MVNO using Orange's network. Have you tried with an Orange sim to see if you get the same behaviour? It is possible Lyca have put you on their greylist but other carriers only implement blacklist and whitelist functionality on their EIR

You should contact your service provider for this kind of problem. I also faced a typical problem like this and I was worried. But at last my service provider helped me.
