Default Is it worth going from 1st gen to 3G?

I bought a 4 gb iphone back when they had the refurbs deal going. I am due for an upgrade and was thinking of the 16GB and give the 4gb to the wife. My questions is: Is it really worth the switch? Besides the extra storage, are there any "good" reasons to have a 3g?

If you're in a good 3G area, then they're great... the GPS works and have already got me out a sticky situation when my TomTom let me down and I personally think the slimmer design is great
