What to look for in a 3.0 phone that is "unlockable"?
I am meeting a guy that has a 3G phone he says is unlocked. I am trading him my new 3G plus $100 for his.
How can I tell if his phone is actually unlocked to be used on T-Mobile?

Look at settings - general - about - modem firmware. It should be 04.26.08 or lower. It should not begin with 05.x
The best way to confirm is to take your own SIM card and a paperclip along and ask if you can swap in your sim card. That way you can confirm the unlock.
It is very easy to fake the carrier name so do not rely on seeing t-mobile in the status bar as an proof of an unlock.
