Arrow [iPhone 3G] What to do In CANADA?

    Hi,

I am very interested in purchasing an iphone in Canada (since I've just moved there from US) and i am not sure what would be the best option. The data limit by fido/rogers is clamping down even if I want to sign a 3 year contact (which is pretty f-uped).

So I am wondering how much would it cost to end the contact after a month with either fido or rogers? Or better yet, I still have family in the US who can purchase the US version for me but since it hasn't been unlocked yet, it wont work in Canada correct? Or should i just wait for an unlock (but how long will that take)? I waited for the unlock before purchasing my original iphone in the United States.

    Thanks,
    J

If youre going with fido/rogers, your bill would look ~50+ service fees and features as a minimum. This price is if you're looking to use data, and is the minimum voice plan with the $30/6GB option they currently have for 3 years.

Can the iPhone only be bought in Canada when signing a 3 year contract? Can't you just commit to one year and pay a higher price for the iphone?

Fido probably has the same ECF rules as Rogers, as technically they are the same company. Rogers, well I know the deal there as I'm with Rogers at the moment.

Rogers requires 30 days notice for cancellation and an Early Cancellation Fee is mandatory and is applied to all wireless accounts that are on a contract. The fee is $20 per month, maximum $400, and minimum $100 for the remaining months of the commitment.

Thus you cannot do what AT&T customers can do, which is purchase the new phone, wait 30 days, pay the first months fee for the contract and then pay an ECF of, I think, $175.

Under Rogers, you'd end up paying the first month contract fee, plus the maximum of $400 to get out of the contract.

I'm in the unfortunate situation of being an existing customer, who signed a new contract in January as I replaced my handset. This means that I am not hardware upgrade eligible, and thus to get a 3G I'd have to cancel my current contract for $400 and then purchase the phone and setup a new contract. Ok, so I'd get the 6GB for $30 deal, but with a voice plan and others bits, it'd probably still work out, including taxes to about $70 per month. It seems Rogers isn't offering any kind of incentives for their loyal existing customers who aren't hardware upgrade eligible, very poor service if you ask me.

No, you have to commit to a 3 year contract to get a 3G. I think the standard contract period for Rogers is 3 years anyway, which is too long to be honest.

If you see yourself staying in Canada for the next three years, you should be indifferent between signing a contract and not signing one.

As mentioned above, Rogers now offers $30/month for 6GB usage, which isn't unlimited, but it's pretty good. You will also need to select a voice plan and a decent one (after fees and taxes) will cost you around $50. So every month you'll be looking at around $80, for three years.

If the contract option is no-go, try looking for an iPhone 3G on Craigslist. That's where I got my 8GB for $600. There isn't an unlock yet, but it will still work on Rogers/Fido.

Be careful, Fido and Rogers SIMs are not interchangeable. A 3G locked to Fido will not take a Rogers SIM and vice-versa.

as far as I know there is no way to get iPhone from Rogers/Fido without getting 3year contract and breaking this contract would cost you an arm and a leg as people above have mentioned.
However I really do not see a need to break the contract, and here is why:
I have purchased an iPhone from Fido and got the following plane: 25$ for talk time (fido-to-fido, evenings and 100 anytime min) plus a 30$ data plan (5Gb per month). This is cheaper then cheapest advertised data plan (60$ for 400Mb with talk) and is much better data rates
Do not forget that with fido you can always change your plan without breaching a contract.
Also, this 30$/5Gb dataplan is a limited time offer from Rogers/Fido for iPhone purchasers (ends Aguast 29 if I'm not mistaken).

    Hope this helps
