[Water Damaged] iPhone 3G is recognized in recovery mode
So i've owned several of these phones, never had water damage before. Basically this is what happened. I'm on the computer, I look over, my son has put my iphone into my cup of juice. It is about halfway into the liquid. I pull it out, the screen is completely white, and I can't force it off with the power button/home button. I see the white screen getting dimmer and dimmer flickering, and then a red circular light up by the ear piece comes on and is a fairly bright red. I was thinking it was the infa-red proximity sensor. I put the phone on a fan, then later a bag of rice. I can't get anything to show up on the screen, However after letting it charge all night, i feel the battery getting warm, and i've tried to turn it on and it is recognized by itunes as a iPhone in recovery mode. When I try to restore it to the newest firmware, It goes through the entire process then gives error 6 at the end. If I hold the power button down, I can hear the iPhone disconnect from my computer, but shortly later I hear it reconnect without touching anything and it is recognized in recovery again.
I dropped an old 2G phone I have into water & they do some strange things like keep rebooting as they slowly dry out.
It took over a week with this phone resting on a warm radiator before it started to kind of work again but in some cases it may never work afterwards.
Its all down to luck

correct me if i'm wrong, but once the phone goes into DFU mode, i will never be able to see anything on the screen even when I try and turn it off right? It gets stuck in DFU until you restore? Right?
And does itunes recognize it in DFU mode? or does it just say recovery?
And lastly, Is there a way to kick a phone manually into DFU without using the button trick. I have pushed those buttons a few times but it doesn't seem to work, And i definately am doing it correctly, even though I can't see anything on the screen. I've been hacking the iPhone since the 4gb was out in the hardware hack days with a magnifying glass XD
iRecovery will let you put your phone into DFU mode as well as kick you back out of it.
ok, So I got iRecovery for win32. TestLibUsb gives me this:
- Manufacturer : Apple Inc.
- Product : Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)
- Unable to fetch serial number string
So it sees it in DFU. but when I run irecovery -s i get:
iRecovery - Recovery Utility

No iPhone/iPod found.
So i'm not sure what to do from this point?
Well, my wife washed my iphone in the washing machine for about 20 minutes. After disassembling, using alcohol to clean it, drying for a week and reassembling the iphone at least started to boot. It just booted up, seeing the apple logo, was recognized in itunes, would sync, but it could not restore and would reboot every 3-5 minutes.
Honestly, try to call apple. I gave it a try, explained the dilemma with the washing machine and the offered me to swap the device either for free if the back had "small cracks" or if the couldnīt find anything to have it replaced for 400€.
In the end it was a free exchange....
