In Italy the 16GB sells for about 570 Euro (850 US$), most ebay sellers ask for up to 800 euro

    EDIT:
In fact... I think this could be true (not "must" but "could"). I didn't need to unlock my 2G iPhone when upgrading it to 2.0 and then to 2.1... just iTunes update... only explanation for me is Telcel became an official carrier...

I will also try to place an ATT SIM on a mexican 3G Phone and viceversa (a mexican SIM in an ATT iPhone) to confirm this myself. I think this has more to be with carriers own rules or country laws than with Apple itself.

    Will post soon.

The sim failure is due to an older type of sim card that is not 3G iPhone compatible. I have two iPhones on the Softbank network in Japan. If I take a non 3G iPhone sim that is a softbank sim, I get the same error. So, your test doesn't prove or disprove the possibility.

Make sure the sim's are for 3G iPhones. If it doesn't work, then try to connect it to itunes after you connected the foreign sim.

i have a fido iphone and while not activated i tried a rogers sim (4xxx series with the hspd marking) and iTunes says invalid sim, tried the ATT sim that came with my 2G iphone and same thing. so i do not believe you can move carriers IN THAT MANNER.

there is however, a method to change the lock or have a different lock than the model number indicates. i got a replacement unit from apple and the model number on the apple page says it is locked to ATT. if i had realised this when i first got it i would have tried to activate it on the ATT sim but i didnt. so the locks can be moved between carriers.

When I say 3G sim, I mean iPhone 3G sim. Yes they are different. The other softbank sim card I tried was a 3G version, just not an iPhone 3G one.
