Default Upgrade an already unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 3G

I have a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3G. The trouble is I bought it that way, so I don't know what software was used (I'm not even sure if that matters) and I don't know how to upgrade it.

My firmware version is 3.0.1 and I want to upgrade it to the latest possible (3.1.3 being the most recent at time of writing).

Is this reasonably straight-forward? Where do I start? (Big question, I know!)

For what it's worth, the modem firmware version is 04.26.08.

Although I like the phone the way it is and I'd like to keep it that way, it wouldn't be the end of the world for me if it wasn't jailbroken & unlocked, providing I could still use it with my present carrier. What would happen if I updated it via iTunes? Would it trash the iPhone or would it work OK but just re-jail & re-lock it? If so, what carrier would it lock it to?

The only other option I guess is to keep it on 3.0.1 until I eventually replace it, but it's getting so new apps won't work on it now and I'm not planning on replacing it for a while yet!

There seem to be some very knowledgeable people on these forums so I hope someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

I'm assuming you have an unofficially unlocked iPhone. What carrier are you with?
Also what is the model number of the iPhone - that is in the same Settings->General->About section that you found the modem firmware version.
What are the 3rd, 4th, 5th digits of your serial number.

Don't update via iTunes. It will upgrade your baseband from 04.26.08 to 05.12.01 and this disables unofficial unlock. You could still jailbreak though.

Use pwnagetool custom ipsw iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.1.3 Using PwnageTool (Mac)
Then unlock again with ultrasn0w iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 3G, 3GS Using UltraSn0w

If you don't have a mac, borrow one from a friend. Download a pre-made custom IPSW from a custom source (we are not allowed to link to these as they are technically warez when people share them on the net). The final option (which I don't recommend and you will get no support for on this site) is to use the unofficial windows clone of pwnagetool - sn0wbreeze.

Custom IPSW/Ultrasn0w is the most stable way to achieve unofficial unlock. Much more reliable than blacksn0w. So you should try hard to avoid updating your baseband. This is where the custom IPSW comes in handy.

Thanks for your reply, Olethros - sorry I have taken so long to respond to you.

Yes, my iPhone is unofficially unlocked. I'm with Orange (UK).
The model number is MB496B and the 3rd/4th/5th digits of the S/N are 911.

Unfortunately I don't have a Mac although I can ask around to see if anyone I know has one.

I'm still interested to know what would happen if I updated via iTunes. I know it would disable the unofficial lock but what effect would that have? Would the phone still be usable and what carrier(s) would it work with?

    Thanks again
    Ian

Okay - your serial number indicates that if you accidentally upgrade your baseband there is no way to downgrade it again. So be very careful.

    To summarise:

    In order of recommendation
    1. Pwnagetool OS 3.1.3 + ultrasn0w
    2. Custom IPSW 3.1.3 (made with pwnagetool - downloaded from net) + ultrasn0w.
    3. Restore to OS 3.1.2 (via shift-click restore in iTunes and manually select 3.1.2 IPSW) then jailbreak with redsn0w and unlock with blacksn0w RC2
    4. Restore to OS 3.1.2 (via shift-click restore in iTunes and manually select 3.1.2 IPSW) then jailbreak with blackra1n and unlock with blacksn0w RC2

    These will all work.

If you just let iTunes update, the iPhone will be locked to the carrier it was originally sold locked to. Based on the model number it is most likely it is locked to O2 (if it came from the UK - the same model number is used for iPhones sold in Ireland and Malta).

    Hope that helps.
