This unlocked 3G iphone is weird
I just got one 16GB from a friend's friend. I popped in my sim card(T-mobile) and it works and there is cydia. So I checked its bootloader and baseband info with fuzzyband. Amazingly the bootloader is 5.09 and baseband is 2.28.......
That means its unlocked by apple or at&t?

Nothing weird about you iPhone!!! It's not unlocked by AT&T or Apple. It's unlocked by yellowsn0w.

Nope, Yellowsnow works with baseband 02.28 only (=firmware 2.2 baseband). You are mixing up things: If someone upgrades to firmware 2.2.1, he will get baseband 02.30, Yellowsnow cant unlock this one. BUT: If the bootloader is 5.8 (5.0.8), you can downgrade the baseband from 02.30 to 02.28. Does only work for bootloader 5.8 NOT for 5.9.....
So just make sure not to restore to firmware 2.2.1, baseband will get updated and your bootloader wont allow a downgrade.
For now I would just enjoy the iPhone 3G and see whats coming up on Monday, maybe firmware 3. AGAIN BUT: dont update then, you'll be stuck. Wait and check with us here ;-)

This phone is running on 2.2.1 firmware. The basedband was downgraded to 2.28? But how was that possible with bootloader 5.9?

Nope, the iPhone was at firmware 2.2 with baseband 02.28. the user then created a custom firmware file 2.2.1 with PwnageTool 2.2.5. This special version does not include a basband update, so the baseband stays at 02.28 but the firmware gets updated to 2.2.1.
