If you're trying to get to a jailbroken and unlocked 4.2.1, you should use redsn0w 0.9.6b5.

OP is back! and just as confused as ever....

So I restored to 3.1.3 and found the 3g has baseband 6.15...

So I did some reading, and it seems the baseband is what is preventing me from updating to official firmware 4.1.2. I found some info on downgrading the baseband, but it required SHSHs which I don't have, so i ruled that out. I also read something about jailbreaking the phone at 3.1.3 to bypass the SHSH check, but haven't found anything in detail that I feel safe following. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

I'm just trying to get the phone to 4.1.2 if possible so that the future user won't have update issues when plugging in to Itunes (i'm assuming 4.1.2 was the last firmware for the 3g). Jailbroken or not I'll take the simplest path at this point.

Edit: If it helps at all, I attempted to use redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak the 3.1.3 firmware but the program does not recognize the ipsw.

Edit: By 4.1.2 I meant 4.2.1. Bad typo to make.

The good news is that the 3G doesn't require SHSH, so long as it is properly Pwned (which yours should be). You're correct, this requires a proper low level jailbreak on 3.x. You will have to use redsn0w to strip the baseband update on the phone in order for the restore to succeed, and you will have to complete the restore in DFU mode. redsn0w 0.9.6b4 is the version you should be using to do this.

Because it's iOS 4.x, I do not believe redsn0w had the ability to strip the baseband update out. If it DOES, it will be under Extras -> Custom IPSW. If that doesn't exist, then you'll need to use TinyUmbrella in order to block the baseband update during the restore as opposed to creating a custom .IPSW without the baseband. If this is the case, then run TinyUmbrella, start the TSS Server, then restore to a stock 4.1.2. The phone will error out with a -1601 at the end (or another error) but you can get it functional again by clicking 'Kick Device Out of Recovery' in TinyUmbrella.

This should get you to 4.1.2 on your phone with 06.15.00. We've got a specific thread set up under the ultrasn0w forum for how tos for the 06.15.00 restore -- take a peek there if these instructions don't seem to help.

I have been successful in bringing the phone to working order in 4.2.1 with baseband 6.15

I downgraded the phone down to 3.1.3 in order to restore functionality and found it was running the 6.15 baseband. Following the reading I had done along with n1ck's suggestions I jailbroke the phone using redsn0w in order to bypass the SHSH check.

Unfortunately, redsn0w did now have the option to strip the baseband, and I didn't have much luck with tiny umbrella, so I had to reach out to a friend with a Mac to use Pwnage tool to create a custom 4.2.1. From the jailbroken 3.1.3 I was able to restore in Itunes to 4.2.1 with no errors whatsoever.

The phone seems to have no problems so far (besides the ones you would expect from 6.15), and it doesn't look like I have to worry about the owner upgrading the phone in itunes and causing problems.

I would like to thank n1ckn4m3 for the guidance; you definitely helped me sow together all the scattered reading I did.
