Default [UK people tax question] iPhone purchase in London

    Hello,

I am from Croatia and I am going to London in October. Then Im hoping to find some iPhone 3G Pay&Go to buy but now I have heard that I cannot get my tax back when I am going back to Croatia, is that true ? I pay the price with tax in some O2 or Apple shop and I cannot get that tax back when I am exporting iPhone to Croatia ? Is there any O2 shops on aeroport then, Ive heard that the aeroports are tax free zones there ? Is there any solution to buy the iPhone without that UK tax for me when leaving UK ?

    Tnx a lot !

So you are saying that he payed net price for an iPhone at the store with his foreign passport ? Not pay with tax in the sotre and then return tax when leaving UK ?

    Tnx

I dont think you will be able to get it in the store without paying tax. Most stores where you buy expensive electronics you will need to either claim at the airport, or fill in a form instore and post it back to them once you have it stamped at the airport. Buying without tax instore opens them up to fraud and the government will make them pay if the phone is not found to have left the country. I would also act quickly before you guys join the EU

Is there any tax free O2 shops at the airport ? Can I then buy it at O2 Store and get my tax back on airport when I am leaving UK ? Is there that sort of Tax refund store or how it is called ? I want to buy it normally but I want that tax back before I load up on airplane, what is the best way to get that done ? Im hoping that we will not join EU so quickly, people are saying that it is not so good when you are EU... :-)

    Tnx

Unlikely, they are selling contract phones that are only contracted for the UK. They don't want customers who are going to leave the country and never use them again.

Well it depends on the system O2 uses, some places you can claim at the airport, and some will make you fill in a form that you have to post back to them, and then they credit your account.

I think that it is better for them to claim it on the airport then. But someone must know if there is a place for tax return at the airport...

    i've claimed camera tax before.

simple, go to a store, buy the item, ask for a tax deduction form at the store (they should give you the form, and all necessary stuff, don't forget invoice), fill out form, and go to tax deduction desk, give them the form, they'll give you the money in cash.

that's how i did it about 4 years ago.... haven't travelled much since university, so hopefully it hasn't changed.
