What I'm using:
iPhone 3G 8GB running v2.2 (5G77)
MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X 10.5.5
Generic USB SIM Reader 119-082-001 (PO #59022)

I have about 175 phone numbers saved to a T-Mobile SIM card that I would like to import to my new iPhone 3G. I took out the AT&T SIM card and replaced it with my old T-Mobile SIM card. Then I tried to use the "Import SIM Contacts" function under Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. There was a brief pop-up that said "Importing SIM Contacts..." but it only displayed for about one second. No contacts were imported. There was no error message. So the import function doesn't work for some reason.

So I decided to buy a USB SIM card reader from Meritline. The reader does not seem to be detected by Mac OS X. It came with a mini-CD with Windows drivers. This is useless to me because my MacBook cannot use mini-discs and apparently only Windows drivers are supplied. I have been unable to find any driver or utility for Mac OS X. What's worse is that I have been unable to find anyone online who has gotten a USB SIM card reader to work under Mac OS X.

I have since jailbroken my iPhone and have been looking for apps that might work since the supplied "Import SIM Contacts" feature doesn't work. I read about SIMPort and some other apps but can't find them on Cydia or Installer. I added a number of additional package sources and still can't find a SIM import utility. So no luck on that front either.

I'm looking for advice on how to fix any of these problems. It seems like I might be out of luck. Is there *any* way to get these 175 numbers off my T-Mobile SIM card?

Any help is appreciated.

Here is what I did long time ago - at firmware 1.0.2
I borrowed the Motorola mobile of my friend, it allowed to move the contacts from the simcard to the mobile's internal memory. Copied it from there to my Windows-PC, exported to my Mac imported into Addressbook (works with Outlook/Addresbook on a WinPC aswell).
Once this was done I deleted the addresses on my simcard (still in my friends Motorola).

Most mobiles do have the option to move stuff from and to the simcard, for years. i would give it a shot.

Import SIM Contacts don't work with a sim proxy installed, remove it and try again.
Simport was never updated from 1.x to 2.x
Search is your friend there are dozen ways to get your contacts from SIM to phone.

i know this problem,you have not a lot o choice.
"contact import" from menu work only with accepted sim.
so if you have no windows you , you need to borrow some phone to a friend who can copy from sim to phone and phone to sim (nokia can do the trick (i do it with my old 6230)).
1/copy contact from your tmobile card to the phone.
2/change sim.
3/copy from phone to the at&t card.
4/put at&t card in iphone and import contact with menu. i just tested yesterday .

if you can find a driver for your usb card reader/writer do the same: copy phonebook from t-mobile card to at&t card.
for your driver try to search "ftdi" or "pl2303" driver because i think this kind of reader is based on this chip...(look too in "prolific" website)

well, you need another phone, import the sim to that phone, sync it to your pc/mac/whatever you are using via whatever method, then sync it to your iphone, it is pain in the butt really

I had the same problem. I tried removing my Universal SIM and tried importing them from the settings menu and it worked.
But now, after restoring to 2.2.1, I tried doing this but it didnt work, I tried both with the Universal SIM installed and not, unfortunately it didnt work.
I think I'll have to use my dads Nokia to sync my contacts to my PC, then to the iPhone.

First,if you jailbreaked your phone than it’s damn easy just SSH your iPhone 3G and Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS and Save sms.db on your computer then follow the vice versa with iPhone 3GS just copy sms.db from your computer to iPhone 3GS /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS folder.

Here is the simple to follow steps to Restore SMS History from Previous iPhone to New iPhone. All you have to do is to copy SMS backup files from old iPhone back up folder to new iPhone back up folder.

Navigate to the iTunes backup folder
1.Windows User : C >> Users >> User Name >> AppData >> Roaming >> Apple >> Computer >> MobileSync >> Backup >>
2.Mac OS X User : ~/Libary » Applications Support » MobileSync » Backup.

In the backup folder there will be X number of folders according to number of phones you synced to your iTunes. For example i have two iPhone 2G and 3G so i have two folders named with 40 random hex characters. But i need to copy SMS from iPhone 3G so how do i identify?
To identify your particular iPhone backup sync both phones with 5 minutes of interval and note the time in your computer clock while syncing.
Now Sort the view by date–this will let you easily tell which subfolder belongs to which phone.
Now you knows the folder where your previous iPhone 3G backup is saved, so explore to that particular folder (iPhone 3G) and copy these two files to iPhone 3GS folder. Make sure you must synced new iPhone 3GS at least once so back up folder will be created.
