Default [AT&T] More on cancelling a contract

I've read all the rumors etc., but haven't actually seen any official policies on this scenario.

I originally bought my iphone about a year ago with no intention of unlocking. Bought a phone at apple store, activated at home with ATT and went along my merry way. ATT service at my house however, was terrible. I knew that in california you have 30 days to cancel new cel service with no penalty, so I gave it 3 weeks before I finally gave up. So about 20 days in, I called ATT and said I wanted to cancel. They of course said no problem, but that The phone was bought from apple and that their return policy is only 14 days, you own it!

Luckily, I stumbled upon this wonderful site and was able to unlock and use Tmobile. Thanks to all!

So I know for a fact that in california there is a 30 day no penalty contract cancellation. I also looked on the apple site and found that their return policy is still 14 days.

Only time will tell, but it looks to me like you could just go to an apple store, buy a 3G, activate in store and then simply cancel in 20 days. Nothing ATT can do and its past apple's return period. Viola, $199.00 3G iphone!

If it were so easy there wouldn't be so many threads around on the same subject... Bottom line: If you cancel within 30 days you HAVE to return the iphone to Apple - that's Apple's policy... So a commitment-free $199 3G iphone species doesn't exist..

If that is so easy then everybody will buy as much as they can. I don't think that it will be easy to buy as last time even as apple understand that their maximum phone will be unlocked and a very less people are going to stay with at&T.

So guess what could be the new plan!

If you dont return the phone within 14 days, they charge you for the full price

hmm interesting...sounds like its easier to get a Passport and apply for a visa than to get an Iphone so it can be supreme EVIL HAXORED....gosh....

so your saying that if i bought an iphone with ATT canceled service within 30days(it was my plan all along!) they will come back and try to charge me full the rest of the balance for the iphone if i don't return it? sounds kinda crazy....we here in TX also have that 30day grace period with all of our cell providers....

i don't think we will fully know until we get someone that reads through the new iphone 3G ATT contract on Friday...everything sounds soooo....FASCIST 100% FASCIST and i dont use that term lightly

But the following quoted from the memo confirms our method to get contract free iphone 3g as we have planned.

    199 + 1 month + ETF

"To cancel service within the first 30 days, the customer must return their equipment to the place of purchase (no exceptions).
If the customer cancels service after 30 days, they will be charged the ETF. The customer is not required to return the device to cancel after 30 days."

If you cancel it after the 30th day, you have to pay the month of service, isnt?
