Default T-Mobile Data Plan Woes on iPhone 3G?

    Team--

Got a problem of my own this time that I can't seem to solve. Donated my old 3G to a buddy of mine who is using T-Mobile and got him jailbroken and unlocked on it with no problem. He's added the $9.99 unlimited web plan and according to T-Mobile's website and all other data, the service should be active. The problem is that when I disable wifi and attempt to browse over EDGE, I am just redirected to the web2go upsell page which tells me I need to call in to change my subscription.

I've searched the forums here (of course) and have searched elsewhere and have received a LOT of conflicting information. It's worth note that I do not care about MMS, my buddy does not have the MMS plan. Here are the things that I have read and tried:

    1) There are posts from 2008 and 2009 stating that the $5.99 T-Zones and $9.99 Unlimited Web plans will work if you use the APN setting of either 'epc.tmobile.com' or 'internet2.voicestream.com'. In both cases, these refer me back to the web2go page asking me to upsell.

    2) There are posts from 2010 saying that the $9.99 Unlimited Web plans will work but I need to use 'internet3.voicestream.com', but this as well refers me back to the web2go page.

    3) There are some posts from 2008 claiming that it's not possible to make the $5.99 or $9.99 plans work on the iPhone and that you will continue to get the upsell prompt until you purchase the $24.99 unlimited data plan for smart phones.

    4) Olethros once posted that you could use UIFaker to solve this issue on a post on hackint0sh a while ago, but I can't find any other information on UIFaker or how it would apply to the situation, every search for it refers me to UAFaker which I don't believe applies to the situation.

In any case, with all of the conflicting information posted out there, I was looking for some clarification because I can't seem to make it work but am seeing posts of people with the same set-up being successful.

I'm not much help here. I did actually mean UAFaker (typo), it was just an idea when it was mentioned you needed to use a branded web browser on other phones. I thought the redirect may be related to detecting the User Agent of Mobile Safari.

However it's quite trivial to detect iPhone models by their unique TAC (first 8 digits of IMEI) and based on this redirect to the smart phone upsell page - if t-mobile are doing this, then you have pretty much no options available.

That's kind of the conclusion I came to. More recent posts claim that you can only get data service on the iPhone with T-Mobile if you subscribe to either their $24.99 unlimited web for smartphones plan or their $34.99 unlimited web + text for smartphones plans. I'm communicating this with my buddy and if he feels like dropping the cash on the data plan, I'll return back a reply to settle once and for all whether or not this is currently the behavior.

Thanks for the reply as always Olethros!

Yep, this is confirmed. Apparently as of about 10/2010, T-Mobile has been restricting data use for iPhone customers to those who have purchased either the $24.99 or $34.99 data plans for smartphones. While there may exist a way to make the $9.95 unlimited plan work, I sure as heck couldn't find it. Buddy upgraded to the $24.99 plan and his internet is working just fine with any of the APNs listed (though I'm told epc.tmobile.com is the one he wants to use, that's what I've got him set up on now.)
