[sounds 2 good 2 be true] Friend promises me universal unlock code
Ok so heres the deal. I have a friend that i know from work that has a cell phone kiosk and hes a dealer and they deal with tmobile, sprint, at&t and nextel cellphones and today after hooking me up with an unlock code for my Blackberry Curve, told me that by tomorrow he can get me an unlock code for ANY phone, so i asked him 'Ok. get me an unlock code for the iPhone 1st gen and iPhone 3G. he said 'OK, hit me up tomorrow and ill have it."
At this point i was like no. no way. apparently he knows someone who works with cell phones in NY and he said the code is a UNIVERSAL unlock code that will work time and time again (until blacklisted i guess) and will legitimately unlock the phone.
I am still a little sketchy about this whole situation, and im betting 99% ill go ask him for it tomorrow and get some story saying that he couldn't get it. but still, this guy hasn't steered me wrong yet so im taking his word for it til tomorrow. Ill keep you all posted.
And by the way, NO, i will NOT be giving out this code to just anybody, but if certain members of the DEV team want it when and IF I obtain it, i will certainly pass it along to them if it helps in ANY way to expedite a software unlock in the near future.
Thinking about it... is this even POSSIBLE?! does the iPhone 3G have the ability to input a code to the phone to unlock it for any carrier?! if so how the hell would i go about even getting to the part where i imput the code. for the blackberry i had to turn off all my settings, go into advanced options and type in a certain command to make hidden stuff pop up and then prompt for the code, so im wondering if its similar for the iPhone.
any information on this matter would be awesome, but I really think this is just waaay too good to be true :p
Anyway I'll keep you all posted

I don't think unlock codes are possible with iPhones. I believe the only way they can be unlocked officially is either if they are bought unlocked from the carrier or if the carrier requests an unlock on the device (after you have paid the premium), so Apple put that device on the activation server as unlocked so when you sync with iTunes, the iPhone will be unlocked. Correct me if I am wrong.

I know, the iphone IMEI nr is stored in apple's database (have this info from a TMO guy here while inserting mine, and yes after the first iTunes sync your device gets unlocked.

ok so update
So far yeah, what i was thinking is coming true.. but still there is some hope.
I was told that this guy has unlocked like 300 iPhones with this technique, but it charges like $1,000 for like every 50 phones to unlock, i was told the guy needs more time, but YES he can get it, but not until friday... so i dont know. still doubtful but just gotta wait longer

He had to register your iPhone to apple's "unlock database", afaik only providers with contract to apple can do that. A general unlock code is BBS (BigBullShit), the iPhone can only be unlocked by give away the IMEI directly to apple and request to unlock. A unlock shop can't do that... T-mobile or AT&T can do it
