GPS patch needs more efforts
Dear friends,
Thanks a lot for your efforts to Enable the GPS functionality of Egyptian Iphones.
I think there is more work to do :
1- Why not put your patch on Cydia so that users can simply install it from Cydia "Just one Click!!!)
2- Will the Egyptian GPS patched phone support GPS outside Egypt (while roaming with another carrier outside Egypt?
3- I suggest to extend it for Firmware 2.1 As well.
4- You guys need to be accurate, this patched file "Location..." is related with the OS firmware ( i.e. 2.1 or 2.2) or it is related to the baseband version (2.11.07 or 2.28.0).
Note: The question No. 4 is very important as you know it is possible to upgrade for firmware 2.2 while preserving your baseband using a custom firmware 2.2.

I cant answer all your questions, will try to solve some.
The nedd for a solution came up from from users in Egypt with a legit contract from mobinil or Vodafone and those in Egypt owning a factory unlocked iPhone. This group is at firmware 2.2 with the matching baseband. They enjoy GPS on their iPhone in Egypt AND when roamin outside Egypt in another country. Plus visitors from other countries with a legit contract from a different country.
As far as I know the patch fpr 2.1 is not done, the group above does not need it. The one working is known to work on legit activated iPhones at firmware 2.2 with baseband 02.28.00.
We dont know today if the patch will be working on an unlocked iPhone 3G, cause the unlock is announced for New Years Eve. Cause thepatched locationd is the one from firmware 2.2 it wont work at firmware 2.1.
The only question is: Will it work at firmware 2.2 (with a baseband lower than 02.28.00), unlocked with the upcoming tool from the dev team. We dont know today, we have to wait and test it. As the dev team stated it is safe to have a 2.2 iPhone but you have to make sure not to update the baseband to 02.28.00 if you want to use the upcoming unlock. The way to a modified 2.2 (with older beseband) is there: PwnageTool.
I would wait a few days. Once the unlock is there we will see testers trying this one out.
just my 2 cent

Just run the app maps on your iPhone. You need to have a data connection to do so. maps has a feature for routing.
If you want to use maps without any data connection, check the thread here. some pages before I had seen dl links to maps.
but as i said, just start maps.
Check post # 153 here in this thread, there is a screenshot of one of the members showing maps in action. tap "Directions" right on the bottom and enter start/stop of your route. Start can be your actual (gps) position.
