sorting out stuff
@ Taher1, kkamel & others asking
let me try to sort things out for you.
The solution - modified locationd file - is made for firmware 2.2. To apply the solution, the iPhone needs to be at firmware 2.2 and jailbroken.
target users for the solution:
1. Legit customers of Mobinil (EG) and Vodafone (EG) with an iPhone contract. You use the iPhone in Egypt but are missing the GPS function. Cause you are legit users, you probably already are at firmware 2.2.
2. Owners of a factory unlocked iPhone. Those are sold in some countries where selling locked iPhones is forbidden. Cause the iPhone is unlocked anyway, you probably are at firmware 2.2.
3. Users of an iPhone with a legit contract from a different country but travelling Egypt -> roaming via Mobinil or Vodafone. Your iPhone is at firmware 2.2 already.
common problem/solution for those users:
Jailbreak the iPhone and apply the patch according to the readme that comes with the package. (check post #147 in this thread for the download links).
how is this related to the upcoming unlock from the dev team?
Not at all for the three target groups mentioned here. The dev team is working on an unlock (to make the phone function available) for those owners of a 3G iPhone, that do not have an iPhone contract or do not own a factory unlocked one.
What to do now / consequences:
Users of group 1-3 can use Quickpwn (mac or Windows version) to jailbreak the iPhone, then apply the patch. You dont need the upcoming unlock from the dev team, so 2.2 is safe for you.
BTW: Once a firmware 2.3 will show up and you upgrade - GPS will be gone again, until the probably new locationd will be patched again and a new version of Quickpwn for jailbreak will be available.
Hope that helps to clear things up a bit.

so do we need to set the permission of the new file to 777 or 775 ?? cause it is not stated in the tutorial
i set it to 777 and it is working fine ...
but actually it is locating me a street away from my actual location :-/ .... which is kinda annoying , cause on nokia N95 it gets the exact location ...... i don't know why this happened , maybe a bad reception .......... will to some testing in several places later
and also the location icon , doesn't load as it did before when triangulating the location via GSM towers , it only turns blue and stands still ............ is this normal ?
but anyway great work guys

Thanks volkspost, I have FW2.1 Vodafone Locked, but I am using *sim to unlock GPS. I don't prefer upgrading to fw2.2, I think I have only 2 options either wait till New Years Eve and see what Dev-Team unlock does to the GPS, or someone compiles locationd for fw2.1, what do you think?

astrix : for me i've set the permission to 755 as the original file was.
---------------------------------------------------------------
kkamel : as a legit owner of an iPhone 3G you aren't affected by the Unlock Method that is going to be released by the Dev-Team you can easily upgrade to FirmWare 2.2 with no problems at all and use the method here to enable the GPS to work.
but as a user that is using a TurboSim to unlock your iPhone 3G, you have three ways to upgrade to FirmWare 2.2
1. get the new TurboSim that is compatible with FirmWare 2.2
2. wait for the Dev-Team to release an unlock that supports the new Baseband introduced by the 2.2 FirmWare.
and there is one more thing you can do...
3. get a custom .ipsw image to update your iPhone 3G.
(custom .ipsw are images made under Mac OSX using the pwnage tool to have the same baseband as the old 2.1, that way you don't update the baseband there for the old TurboSim will work and when the Dev-Team Releases the unlock method it will be compatible with it.)
---------------------------------------------------------------
momoh_16 : be sure to follow the instructions that are provided with the patched locationd file and it will work perfectly.

copy that, thx modrus
Would be interesting to see if it works with the *sim solutions. maybe it wont cause *sim is tricking the network anyway. but I dont know, dont have a unit to test here.

volkspost : the ones that use a "TurboSim Solution" don't need to use this Method to get the GPS to work as it emulates that the iPhone is not in Egypt so they aren't affected by the GPS ban.
