My guess is that somewhere (either in the locationd binary or in the iphone baseband) there is code that does something like this:
if (country of network phone is connected == Egypt) or (country of SIM card in phone == Egypt) then don't allow GPS
What we need is someone who understands ARM and iPhone reverse engineering to disassemble locationd and figure out how it works.

    Hi all,

    Did you hear about dev-team?
Those are the only people out there whom are working on the iphone 3g carrier baseband unlock (aka: software unlock)

Those guys are currently reverse engineering the baseband code, in order to override the carrier lock code

I bet that if we ask those people, they can also check out for the gps disable code and override it

I am sure that the override code is done in the baseband and NOT the OS

My advise is we seek those people, because even if the code is found and overriden, how could you install the "cracked" baseband code on ur phone? You need to create a .ipsw file and use the pwn tool (which those guys i told u above created actually)

just visit http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ and see the last 3 weeks posts (i guess there are only 8 posts for the last 3 weeks)

This is there last pwn tool that cracks the os (not the baseband yet)
    http://blog.iphone-dev.org/page/2

If you delve more, you will see posts where the team actually started decyphering the baseband code
