Not true, 3G phones can restore to any version of 3.x, as the soft-SHSH check was only added to iOS 4.0+ for the 3G. They don't require an SHSH to restore to iOS prior to 4.0, and 3G iPhones with pwned LLB (read: properly jailbroken 3G phones, jailbroken by redsn0w or PwnageTool) can bypass the SHSH checks for restoring any version of iOS unless the user restores a factory firmware and un-pwns the LLB. This means that in just about any case, a 3G user can downgrade to 3.1.2, use PwnageTool to create a custom 3.1.2 .ipsw, restore that to the phone to jailbreak and pwn the LLB, then restore any version of 4.x without SHSH.

Back your phone up and then get the iPhone restored to the version of iOS you want to jailbreak, then use the corresponding version of redsn0w for that version to jailbreak. Use iClarified's jailbreak wizard to get step by step instructions if needed.
