Signing is only for 3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch.
3G - can always be restored to 3.1.2 and you should stay with that version if you want an unlock

)
however after downloading and then trying to restore the firmware, right at the end i get an error - although i couldnt tell you what it is now sorry
I have just tried jailbreaking my 3g 3.1.3 and still the wi-fi is dead so am thinking of tring hard to get back on 3.1.2 . will this change the baseband back as am presumign this could be the issue?
No it will not change the baseband back. You cannot generally downgrade baseband.. Can try fuzzyband (very small chance)
What error do you get on restore?

Ok i just tried again and i got:
"iPhone ***** could not be restored, An unknown error occured (1015)"
this was trying to restore to 3.1.2, would this be because my bandbase has already updated
thanks

Ok i managed to get it back to 3.1 using quickpwn to bypass the silly error (litrally just apple not wanting ya to use the firmware - hence unknown)
i would have gone to 3.1.2 but could be bothered restoring yet again.... will keep updated on the wifi issue by editting this post (if no1 replies before hand).
EDIT: change of plan, redsn0w recommends 3.1.2 ... so
