    Agreed. Apple is not going to be able to force non-partner carriers to push updates over the non-partner networks. And I also agree with others in this thread that automatic updates either won't occur, or will be easily disabled by the community.

    Its likely apple will find other ways to force people to update though. For example, if you try to access the mobile iTunes store (music, movies, TV, apps etc), apple can check the version on your phone somehow and refuse access if you aren't running the right version.
    They can make iTunes refuse to talk to your phone unless you are running the latest version. (of course, that just leads to people posting/sharing/using old/hacked iTunes builds)

    I have no doubt that the 3G iPhone will be cracked though and that hackers will beat whatever apple throws at them (look at Sony and the PSP and how crackers have beaten that time and time again and Sony have the advantage of being able to force a firmware update anytime you insert the latest game disk into your PSP)

    It is unlikely as it is very easy to fake an OS version

    OS versions are not exactly hardcoded. They can easily be modified via .plist file Plus, iTunes could easily be patched to fix that if need be
