Question [Question] how does a factory unlocked 3g stay unlocked after an update?

iPhone 3g's that are factory unlocked (aka legally unlocked) are updated with the same firmware file as any other iPhone but what allows them to stay unlocked?

I have not played around with one myself, but plan on getting one to see if one can be used to unlock others.

firmware is same but att phone is hardware locked. To unlock you would need to move one chip which means moving whole pc board which does not make economical sense unless maybe your att phone is broken because of your fault not fuctional, i.e. you might designate one phone for parts

iTunes send a combination of NOR ID, SerialNumber, ModelNumber and IMEI to Apple servers, they respond with the NCK token and unlocks the baseband, it all about your modell. No magic behind.
    iPhone: 16GB White
    Shop: Italy - Portogruado
    Jailbreak: QuickPwn
    Network: German O2 (Unlocked)
    Firmware: 2.2

even if it was true what you described this is not baseband unlock but temporary authorization to use other carrier sim card in hardware sim locked iphone. SIm locked iphone remains hardware sim locked for its life and without hardware modification it is not possible to sim unlock iphone permanently.
    Good night

Thats not true, sorry. In germany we have locked T-Mobile phones, for some time you can obtain them unlocked, they send the IMEI to apple and after a iTunes sync the phones where unlocked. So its all a matter of Apples database, every iPhone can unlocked by his NCK code / token. All phones the same, no differences in hardware or baseband, they only have different IMEI's, NOR ID's and Serials.

Spot on, that's how mine works. I queried it with the factory when I bought mine, just to be doubly sure I would never have a bricked iPhone after an update.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

Every single post you've made in this thread is 110% wrong.

Please, if you are making crazy assumptions, put a couple "I think..."s or "I'm not sure but.."s in there so noobs don't actually listen to you.

you do not understand. These phones are simply marked in database to allow other carrier sim card. And phone does retrieve database query NOT only thru itunes. Phone is not permanently unlocked and T-Mobile/Apple does not offer such service for free.
