Unhappy [Problem] Iphone crashed while picking up call and half disconnecting usb charger

    Background Info:
Phone: Iphone 3G firmware 2.1 Jailbroken (but not unlocked)
    OS: Windows XP
Software: Itunes 7.7 and Itunes 8.0 (latest)

    Story:

My phone crashed when I tried taking a call while the phone was charging. When I picked up the phone, I yanked it a little too hard (damn cords are too short) and the usb connection was half-pulled out while at the same time, I managed to slide the answer bar all the way to the screen, resulting in the phone crashing.

I pressed power + home to shut off the phone and hopefully turn it back on. It wouldn't turn back on.

So I went home and tried to put it in DFU mode. Itunes 7.7 was able to detect it I downloaded the firmware 2.1 (even though 2.2 has been out for a few days, I didn't want to update yet). I hit shift-restore and selected the firmware, and after a minute or two when itunes is trying to prepare the Iphone for restore, it gives me an error message of 1601.

I tried Itunes 8.0 and restore with the firmware. Same result
I tried Itunes 8.0 and restore with the new firmware 2.2. Same result
I even tried Itunes 7.7 and restore with the new firmware 2.2. Still same results.

I noticed that just before it says "Preparing Iphone for restore" I hear the USB disconnection sound each time, so I figure I would disconnect the phone while it is preparing for the restore, reconnect it and go through the steps to put the Iphone in DFU.

This time it gave me the error of 1600. For all the same combination above as well. I have restarted my computer each uninstallation of Itunes (I followed through with removing even programs like "bonjour", "apple mobile update", etc.

Has anyone had this problem before? How did you solve it? I'm trying really hard not to blame the person who called, but y'know, anger and frustration overpowers logic. TIA.

Even if you dont like the idea of upgrading to firmware 2.2, I would give it a shot. Make sure to have iTunes 8.0.2 installed, connect the iPhone and just hit restore in iTunes. (btw: I hope iTunes recognizes your iPhone when not in DFU).
usually this should do the trick. You could use Quickpwn then later to jailbreak it.

One more: just in case it works this way. After the upgrade iTunes will probably offer to "restore data from a backup" or "setup as a new iPhone"; choose the later. If you restore you might get back the corrupt settings that prevent the iPhone from booting. After that just sync the iPhone.

Itunes does not recognize my iphone when not in DFU.

Currently version of iTunes is 8.0.2. Furthermore, my hard drive crashed last week, so I had to pick up a new one. I have no back-up since the last hard-drive. =(

Sorry hearing that. Can you put the iPhone in simple restore mode and give it a try?

Disconnect the iPhone from your PC and start iTunes on the PC. Shut down the iPhone by eitehr holding Home button until the red slider shows up or hold home and start/sleep until the screen goes black (release both buttons then).
Then on the iPhone hold home button and while still holding connect the iPhone and the PC - keep holding Home. After a few seconds iTunes should detect an iPhone in recovery mode - release Home button. The iPhone's screen probably will show the iTunes logo and USB cable.
Shift restore to the firmware you want to use. BUT: You cant "downgrade" - so if the iPhone got 2.2 ever, you have to choose 2.2. The 3G's got a new baseband each new 2.X version and wie cant downgrade as of now (not even in DFU mode).

If I were you I would try to restore to 2.2

    Keep my fingers crossed

The Iphone does not turn on. I see nothing on the screen. No usb or world connection, no apple screen. I've tried it with both official firmware restores for 2.1 and 2.2. Still no luck. Oh man, I wonder if I can bring it back into the store and hope Rogers (in Canada) doesn't suspect its jailbroken.

Before trying to return the iPhone I would give it antother shot on a different computer.
DFU restore should work, just make sure to be in DFU with the black screen. If it aint work on another computer with regular or DFU restore to apple firmware 2.2 I'd guess you have to return it.
