Updating from FW 2.1 (5F136) bb 02.11.07 to latest unlockable FW (but not unlocking)

Hey everybody, been reading this forums for a while.
I came across this situation and could find the answer:

I have a locked 3G with FW 2.1 (5F136) baseband 02.11.07.
Right now, I don't want to jailbrake/unlock it yet.
What I want is to upgrade to the latest firmware, that
will still allow me to jailbrake and unlock it when I decide to.

BUT: I have searched here, and other places, and wasn't able to find it, I'm pretty sure its out there, but it won't hurt you guys to help out right
-what is the latest FW that will allow me to jb/unlock if i wanted too?
-how do I update to this latest FW without jailbraking or doing anything serious to the phone?
-is it possible to use itunes to update FW but no to the latest one, since as i understand it has a baseband that is not unlockable yet?

look my friend you can upgrade to firmware 2.2 and it will have the Baseband 2.28 which will allow you to unlock it easily .. and if you want the 2.2.1 FW you need to get a Custom version which will preserve the baseband 2.28 if you got the normal 2.2.1 FW it will update your Baseband to 2.30 which is unlockable until the moment :) !! or you can wait untill the OS 3.0 comes to the real world but i dont prefer updating to that FW at the moment :) !!

so you're saying that the latest fw unlockable i can update to is 2.2.1 (or even 3.0 but thats different)but it is easier to upgrade to 2.2?
so, how do i update to 2.2, with the easy method? cuz if i try itunes, it is only allowing me to update to the latest one, which like u said isn't unlockable.

What you need to do is to download firmware version 2.2(5G77) file (NOT 2.2.1- WARNING!) , you can find it on this link:

After this open Itunes and while pressing Shift key click Restore this must give you the option to select the file you want to restore your iphone from(select the file you've just downloaded). Wait till the whole process completes.

Then download QuickPWN from the same site to perform jailbreak and follow onscreen instructions , is very user-friendly and easy to use.

Finally Download yellowsn0w from Cydia to unlock it
