No, dont. You have to use the PuTTY (free, download) or WinSCP (free, download). After you copied locationd to the iPhone, connect via PuTTY or WinSCP (you need OpenSSH installed on the iPhone to do so -> it's on Cydia), then set the permissions.
dont open or alter the file locationd.
I am pretty busy with my real life job, no time for a tutorial now. Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow and write up something.
Hello,
If you are a windows user and have iPhone 3G running 2.1 firmware and need to upgrade to 2.2 without loosing the chance to unlock your iPhone when they release their new unlock tool (already announced, you need to keep your older baseband.....to do this you have 2 options:
1- If you are a legit user (with a contract and an officially Activated iPhone)
- use quickpwn to jailbreak iphone 2.1
- search for a custom made ipsw with unchanged baseband and NOT ACTIVATED.
- use your itunes to restore to this custom made ipsw
2- If you are not a legit user (without a contract)
- use quickpwn to jailbreak iphone 2.1
- search for a custom made ipsw with unchanged baseband and Activated for non At & T users.
- use your itunes to restore to this custom made ipsw
These are just guide lines and not a detailed tutorial, you need to find one
I did that and now I have a Jailbroken iPhone running 2.2 with the old baseband and waiting for the Dev Team release
Have fun
Ok..now that we have GPS on our Egyptian iPhones ( thanks to the great guys here ) time for the real work...
- Do we have good GPS application like that of TomTom?!!!
- What about GPS maps for Egypt!!!
Any clue?
There are 3 things that are done when pwning an iPhone
Jailbreaking, activating and unlocking (the last one should be out by Xmas eve by dev team)
Jailbreaking permits the user to access and modify system directories, files, permissions etc.
Activation is activating the iPhone OS functionality which is done (officially) by inserting a valid carrier sim of the iPhone locked carrier u bought from (AT&T, vodafone, etc). Only one carrier is officially supported. This is done by sending AT modem commands for the baseband (BB) modem. The BB checks the sim validity and responds to the OS that it's ok, and the OS activates
Both of these do not need patching the BB, u need to patch only the OS for them
Unlocking is patching the BB to actually override the carrier lock checking, and permits any sim to work. This requires patching the BB
All 3 above violate ur warranty
However, jailbreaking and activating could be fixed by simply restoring the firmware with iTunes
Unlocking however for the iPhone 3g could (and I say could, might, may) be irreversable
If so, u'll loose ur warranty
So, unless you want the unlock coz u really have to unlock, don't unlock (how many unlocks are in this statement :))
If u intend to use another sim for a short time, just buy urself a *sim
Otherwise, if sth goes wrong, and u sent for warranty, and they tested with another sim, and they found a signal... Ur out, they'll return the phone and tell u sorry u broke the warranty by unlocking the device
I bet apple warned all their resellers about pwnage
Come on guys :( is it really worth it?
Anyways, someone pm me a link for v2.1 locationd
Oh and 1 more thing, unlocking will get u rid from ur *sim for sure, but I doubt it'll make GPS work for Egypt though
And one final thing, we'll be needing a locationd patch for every os update, coz for sure they update locationd with new features

I second Mellervin's opinion and I won't Unlock unless I have to....BUT I will sure keep my Firmware up to the latest version ( com on Mellervin.....I want to enjoy all these new features) but I will also make sure that I can Unlock anytime by keeping the original base band....:)
I travel for a week and come back to find this :-)) Maybe I should travel more often to bring good luck to all you here at Hackint0sh!!!

Works like a charm :)
Thank you very very much.
