Retrieve photos from old backup?
I've looked through previous threads but couldn't find a solution to my problem. First off, my phone's a 3G and I'm on Windows XP (I know most others here are on Macs).
I had to do a restore on my phone today and when I tried to go back to the last backup (11/13), there was an error. At that point, the only thing I can do was restore as new. I didn't lose any of my apps, but my contacts, texts, call history, and photos are all gone. At this point, I care most about recovering the photos, anything else would be a bonus.
I read somewhere that (some?) .mddata files are actually jpg's in disguise, so if you changed the ext to .jpg, you can get some pictures back this way. Well I tried this for a few of the files in the backup folder, and it did work, but they only turned out to be the icons for my apps.
At this point, I'm guessing the pics were all wiped from the backup folder in today's sync after the restore. So next, my boyfriend did a data recovery of our hard drive, and we did find a bunch of .mddata and .mdinfo files (among many other things, of course) that were deleted on 11/13 (previous sync) and 11/21 (latest sync).
But here's where we're stuck. We recovered some of these files and copied them back into the iTunes backup folder, but other than the apps, nothing is different from the factory settings. Can anyone guide me on how to recover my lost photos? Are we looking for the wrong files? Perhaps going about this completely wrong even? Would really appreciate any and all advice.
Re: Retrieve photos from old backup?
The mdhelper is only available on mac I think.
There are tools to extract an iTunes backup on windows. There are Aldo simpler and free tools to extract an iTunes backup on mac
Mdhelper is a little more advanced.
The three files (especially the manifest) contain an index to the rest of the files in the backup. They contain checksum values so the restore process can verify the files restored are intact.
