I have an iPhone 3G which is an unlocked piece I bought from a local shop here in India. There is major problem with the Edge & GPRS going offline every now and then. The only way to get it back is to reboot the device a few times and if you are lucky it comes back.
Can anyone PLEASE give me a solution for the same.

Chances are, your device is not an official unlock. Are you using any of the xSim solutions?
You may have a *sim solution soldered in the main board, what you need to do is check your model number against the official unlock countries list.
The model number is located in Settings --> General --->About

Simple, the xSim is soldered onto the contacts of your sim reader INSIDE the iphone. I know two guys that are scammed just like you. Open it up and you'll see.

You can upgrade with the PWNAGE Tool. Don't update the baseband. Again, no one knows for sure if the xSim will continue to work after new software and basebands are released. Also, if an unlock comes out, I'd recommend you get the soldered xSim removed before doing the unlock.
A few other tests you can do to be sure that there's an xSim INSIDE your iphone.
1. While your phone has signal, turn on AIRPLANE MODE. Then wait for a bit, then turn it back off. Does your phone regain signal?
2. When you go to 'Settings' do you see a menu called 'Carrier'?
BTW, if I were you, I'd bring the phone back to the shop and get a refund. Its clearly a scam.

1) I put the phone on airplane mode and then switch it on again nothing shows up...I mean no signal
2) There is no "Carrier" listed in the Settings menu
Please tell me one thing, in the future can the chip be removed??

Thanks to you guys I now know for a fact that i have been Duped.
Now, if the guy does not take the iPhone back, CAN I HAVE THE CHIP REMOVED LATER ON WHEN THE DEV TEAM UNLOCK ARRIVES WITHOUT DAMAGING THE iPHONE???????
