No data connection since Cydia updates/Appsync error

On my 3G 8GB iphone (3.1.2) i can't get a data connection anymore!
I rarely use my data connection so only noticed recently- the only thing I can think of thats changed is I did about 20 Cydia updates in 1 day (after none for months)- when I was doing them Cydia kept crashing and I kept getting an error message relating to appsync and some file that cant be overwritten (overwrite/usr/libexec/instald)

So I uninstalled installous and got rid of appsync 3.1 - now I no longer get the error message but cant connect using data still!!

Anyone got any suggestions - if i used appbackup would it help to wipe cydia apps and reinstall or do I need to wipe my iphone and start again on 3.1.2 (afraid of 4 coz its slow now as it is!)

You are asking for help to resolve problems caused by patches and software that are only used to pirate iOS apps.
