New iPhone 3G NEED HELP UNLOCKING AND PREPARING FOR STRAIGHT TALK!!

My buddy is giving me his old At&t iphone 3g and I just bought a straight talk Sim online. I need someone to tell me the best method of jailbreaking and unlocking for this phone. I don't want he easiest method I want to know what version firmware things run smoothest on and will I be able to use apps. I am also confused could someone explain to me why there is a million different blahblashsnow progams for the phone and what one is the best to use. I am completely new to jailbreaking and what not but I will reward someone with a few bucks on paypal if they let me know what is the best versions of for the software are for the phone. please I also wanted to maybe look into a little overclocking if you have any advice about that.
