Locked iPhone 3G I wanna activate, but don't wanna screw up potential future unlock

Ok, so I have bought a locked iPhone 3G (don't ask, I knew it when I bought it) on eBay. I would like to upgrade, jailbreak and activate it so that I can use the iPod function

The thing is; I've read stuff about updating the baseband will hurt your chances on using a future software unlock. I can't find specific info on what I should do in order to not hurt my chances. I wanna unlock with winpwn cause I've used it on my iPod Touch before.

What's the best way to proceed here so that I could still unlock it in the future?

Read something about upgrading the baseband might make the iPhone 3G unlockable if a future unlock appears. What are the facts behind this? I've yet to read a full explanation about this.

I'm waiting for a phone I bought on eBay. I wanna activate it and jailbreak it (even though it's locked) but I wanna be able to unlock it in the future WHEN it will be possible, cause I believe it will :).

So what's the stance? How should I proceed?

Using one of the PWNing tools will jailbreak it without updating the baseband. That way your safe for future unlocks, if it ever comes. Basicacally they are unsure if they can unlock the first baseband on the 3G let alone the subsequent updated basebands.

For example, if I use Winpwn, is there some special button I have to click in order for it to now update the baseband, or does it just not update it by default?

What would happen if I pop it into iTunes instead? Will it try to activate the phone before it tells you there's an update available?

iTunes willalways give you the option to update but you dont have to accept it. If you pwn the phone and use a custom 2.0.2 ISPW then iTunes wont offer an update cos as far as its concerned you are up to date.

Just hope those hacker boys get cracking on the unlock so it's out by the time I get my phone :D:P
