Jailbroken 3g stuck bad...

My wife's 3g wont charge. When I plug it in to ac or computer the lightning bolt charge screen pops up with battery showing a sliver of red. It stays that way no matter how many hours I leave it plugged in..
I've spent hours in message boards looking up solutions. and i've already tried different cables and computers. and after trying multiple times I finally got it into DFU mode (I could never get RecBoot to recognize iphone). In dfu mode i first let itunes try to restore it (at this point i dont care if its jailbroken when it comes out of its 'coma' ;) ) iTunes gave me the:
The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1601)
I didnt have much faith in the itunes restore, but it seemed to get me a step further...
So i searched on and on about this error, and I downloaded iREB, and got it to recognize the iphone in dfu, and i started the iREB recovery (which is supposed to bypass this error (1601)) and after 15 minutes its still stuck at the "uploading WTF" stage, just under 1/2 of the progress bar..
I'm at a loss for what to do next... Worse case scenario, I take it to APPLE Store (because my warranty still has ONE week left on it) and I am pretty confident that they wont be able to restore it, let alone turn it on and realize its jailbroken, so I'm thinking I'll get a 3gs... haha 'worse' case scenario right?
Please let me know if any of you guys have had a similar problem!

Don't use iREB - it generally just disguises real problems.

It sounds very much hardware related, I would get it replaced under warranty.
