iPhone wont charge will sync

I have an iPhone 3G that is out of warranty. I'm at least pretty good with it technically.

Randomly last night my wife put it on the charger (its hers) and nothing happened. It completely discharged and we were stuck at the black/red screen but it would show a lightning bolt logo and go no further. To trouble shoot I swapped the logic boards between this iPhone and another I have.

When I put the new logic board in it charged fine. And now old logic board would at least power on in the other phone (is this making sense?) So this tells me its a problem with the software/logic board not battery or dock connector.

So now I put it all back together and did a restore and it still wont charge. Only syncs and shows the plugged in icon. The weird thing is it WILL charge for a minute or two.

Any ideas whats going on here???

Can you get the device into DFU mode and restore the OS, then set it up as new?

I tried a DFU restore with the same outcome. Still shows that its plugged in but no lightning bolt to charge.

Any other ideas anyone?
