Iphone 3g with T-mobiles EDGE---Is it worth it?

As you can see by the title, I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on whether to unlock an iphone 3g and switch network carriers. (Is T-Mobile edge fast enough to use on the go, is it reliable, how does it rank in comparison to other edge networks, and how is t-mobiles coverage overall?) Personal opinions would be prefered. I am located in Illinois, if anyone else has this, please help

P.S. Also wanted to know whether to buy unlocked iphone from hong kong or terminate after 30 days and buy turbo sim. (which turbo sims are preferable and what are pros and cons) When you terminate your contract early, does att unlock your phone or just keep it locked, and do turbo sims just bypass the unlocking part until its taken out; or perminately unlock the iphone 3g with one use?

Well i'm tested my brother 3g iphone
(at&t with my tzone (epc.tmoble.com)
tzone run at 148 kps
3g att run 114 kps as the same location

im around 145 kbps here in Holland on Vodafone ( 3G phone)

1.it is fast, i've found it to be faster than att's edge, check out your coverage on t-mobile.com (if your coverage is between 1-2 bars count on not being able to get signal.)

2. i would say go with the unlocked one from hong kong, because I have read the turbo sims can be pretty screwy and not really reliable; No att will not unlock iphone if you cancel, and yes the turbo sim just bypasses the unlocking until its taken out.

Thanks for all the insight sariano83 These questions have been bugging me for a while. Does anyone (who has edge) like how fast it goes. (Is it worth getting edge, and is the speed good?)

-i have a universal sim on my phone and it's been working perfectly since 2.0.1.
-tzones costs 5.99 and if you use the epc.tmobile.com apn then you don't need to install that annoying proxy hack
-speed is decent, of course, not as fast as 3g but it is fine. i am able to have pandora running on my phone off edge and drive nicely at 60mph on the highway. so yea.... 3g is pretty good on the t-mobile network :)

I am using gevea sim to bypass the locked state (cant call it unlock) and use it on T-Mobile.. Also, my $5.99 plan works too with epc.tmobile.com without any proxy hack.. But a quick question.. Is your 3G enabled ? Coz my vendor told me that these *sim solutions won't work with 3G enabled.. So are u using 3G speeds as well with this universal sim solution..

i have my 3g disabled. also, i did not update my universal sim since i got it. i do not have a pacay. but it works fine :)
