iphone 3g 1604 error....
I am new to this forum, and looking for some help with a 3G I have just brought. Everytime I try to restore in iTunes I get a 1604 error. I do not mind if the iPhone is returned to factory settings or Jailbroken. I have read a few Guides/How-to's; and below is my related information.
iTunes version: 10.5.2.11
iPhone OS version: I do not know because I have never had this phone working
OS Version: Windows 7 x32
FULL iTunes restore Log: pastebin - rclarke1604error - post number 2120862
Any help appreciated,
1604 is usually USB related. Either you've got a bad cable (is it OEM or after market?) or you've got a flaky USB controller (or outdated drivers).
Try replacing the cable, try a different PC, try another USB port on the same PC. If none of that works, it's very possible the dock connector on the phone is damaged somehow -- did it ever get wet, etc?
Thanks for the reply.
I have tried lots of different USB cables on different ports on different pc's. So I had ruled out the USB connection as the solution, although I will try updating the USB drivers. Would USB 1.0 make a difference to USB 2.0?
I could always try fitting a new dock connector on the iPhone in question, but I was wondering if it could be software related before I start buying new parts. Any software related suggestions?
I am not sure if the phone has evernote wet, I do not know the complete history of this I device, s I have not owned it from new.
Thanks again for your help so far,
USB1.0 to 2.0 should not be an issue, but I do always use a USB2.0 machine so I can't say as I've ever tested it.
It is possible that it could be software related, but that's very very uncommon. In most cases that it's not USB port / cable related, it's due to a broken Apple Mobile Device Service on the syncing computer, in which case completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes can fix it.
Thanks for the reply. I have tried lots of different cables, different PC's, different USB ports etc. I have reinstalled iTunes and I still get the same errors (1603 in restore and 1604 in DFU).
How can I check for a broken Apple Mobile Device Service?
Do I need to do more than a basic uninstall of iTunes? How do i "completely uninstall" iTunes?
Any help appreciated; I am beginning to think that this iPhone is only any good as a paper weight.
Sorry, I forgot to mention a few details. When I begin the restore via iTunes (custom or stock) it hangs up half way through, then it pops up either the 1603 or 1604 error. I have tried replacing the dock connector, but this does not make a difference. Once it hangs up I am just stuck with the apple logo and a spinning wheel; this screen remains until the battery runs out, I cannot exit this screen or force a restart.
Any further help appreciated/needed.
Just uninstall from the control panel and then re-install with the .exe from Apple's site. It's worth a shot but I don't hold too much hope that it's going to fix the issue -- you may just have a dead phone at this point that needs a logic board replacement.
Ok, I will try this again. Thanks.
So what software issues could this be to give a 1603/1604 error? It manages to get part way through the restore, and then hangs up.
Any further help appreciated.
I can't really answer what software issues could cause it. It could be one of many things. Hundreds of things can impact your iTunes software, from antivirus being overzealous to a failed update of the Mobile Device software, etc. As mentioned, the 1603/1604 is usually a signalling issue, meaning that at some point during the restore, USB connectivity was interrupted. This could be because of bad usb drivers, a bad usb port, a bad cable, or a bad iTunes install. There's not much more I can tell you.
